Now that fall planting is almost complete, Iāve had a chance to do some prep for next year and clean up!
One project I desperately needed to look in to was why my purple sensation allium were not producing like Iād expected them to.
Short answer: theyāre root bound. They canāt breathe.
This is what 8 years in the ground looks like. This clump began as a single bulb. Three years ago I had even stuck a shovel down and took a few clumps out to create breathing room.
Because I knew exactly where the old bulbs were, I actually dug them up this morning, added some new soil, and replaced them with new bulbs. These existing bulbs will be rehomed to flower friendās in the community and also planted in random places in our gardens!
Lesson learned: donāt wait so long to split these allium. Growing in zone 6a in lower Michigan is such a drastic change from my 4b zone in Wisconsin. My allium in Wisconsin never quite grew like they do here. Every lesson gives the opportunity to grow!
