This unusual looking blob is a wine cap mushroom sawdust spawn. We planted some raspberries from my grandmother's patch. In between the raspberry plants we layered grass clippings, mushroom spawn, and wood chips. As the raspberries grow they will provide shade for the mushrooms and the mushrooms will break down the wood chips into new soil.

While the underground network of mycelium is hard at work it will occasionally send up fruiting bodies, aka mushrooms, in an effort to spread by spores. These wine cap mushrooms are edible and easy to identify. They are great at growing in mulched pathways or the spaces between plants that would otherwise go unused. Have you ever considered planting mushrooms?

Drip tape installed โœ…๐ŸŽ‰

So excited to have a proper irrigation system in the annual rows. Drip irrigation saves time and water, is more targeted than a sprinkler so you aren't watering your weeds, and prevents diseases like fungus caused by damp leaves.

Next up is mulching walkways and preparing for our first market on Monday.

Even though it hailed the garden is thriving thanks to over 2.5 inches of rain in the last 24 hrs. I got to skip morning watering and harvest some kale, spinach, basil, and the first larkspur of the season.

Happy Mother's Day! Thinking of all the moms today and especially grateful for my mom. It's only fitting that the first home grown bouquet of the year goes to the best mom/grandma there is.

The ladies are looking grown up at only 10 weeks old. I don't expect to get any eggs until June or July but they are hard at work eating weeds, catching bugs, and minimizing organic waste. They tolerate some overly enthusiastic pets from the little man in exchange for lots of snacks.
