Life lately on the farm…

The high tunnel has officially been given a complete makeover after that April storm decided to redecorate it for me. It’s now fully reskinned and better than ever—so serious gardening can finally begin! Polycarbonate end walls are a game changer.

I also removed most of the plastic around the goose pens. The goslings are old enough now that they don’t need quite so much protection. The turkey babies and one very late-hatched gosling still have their plastic “storm shelter” in place, just in time for the next round of Kansas weather drama.

With the plastic mostly gone, everyone has much better airflow, so I’m not worried about them getting too hot. The birds are happy, the high tunnel is standing tall, and for the first time in a while it feels like the farm is winning instead of the weather. 😊

Faith has been home about four weeks now and my goodness… this girl is growing like a w**d. 🌱Tank is enjoying getting his bluff in early.

Four cups of food a day, plus raw liver and fresh farm eggs — that kind of nutrition doesn’t mess around. You can see where it’s going. 🤣🥚🥩

She’s just about old enough to start spending more time out with the livestock, learning the ropes beside Bear. He’s still a little unsure about having a “helper” tagging along, but every good farm dog has to train the next generation, right? He’ll come around.

There’s something special about watching a young pup grow into her purpose out here. Strong body, steady mind, and a job to do. I just love this little girl. 🥰

Farrier Day = Spa Day… farm edition

After that little “false spring” tease, winter came back this morning with below-freezing temps and brisk winds. Brrr! But hooves don’t care about the weather — they keep growing.

Meet Ben Goddard, farrier extraordinaire, who has been trimming my horses for over 6 years. He keeps these barefoot beauties balanced, level, and comfortable.

Regular trims aren’t just cosmetic. A proper trim supports healthy movement, prevents cracks and flares, improves weight distribution, and keeps joints and tendons aligned the way they’re meant to be. Good feet truly are the foundation of a sound horse.
