May 15th is here! That's the last possible frost date at our farm (at least from our experience). That means it's finally safe to plant tomatoes outside without potentially needing frost protection.

Last night was also probably the last night for a fire in the greenhouse this spring. We heat our greenhouse entirely with wood cut from our farm during timber/lumbering projects and while creating livestock and wildlife habitat.

We do still have lots of plants available. We'll be at the Boyle County Farmers' Market tomorrow morning 9AM-Noon with a full display of plants. We also take orders for pickup at the farm and delivery in Danville.

We have plants for sale here at the farm available by order/pickup here at the farm or scheduled visit! Please message/text us to either place an order, or to schedule a drop-in visit. We do not have a self-serve plant sale set up this year.

For more information, see plant product descriptions on our website: https://foxfirefarmky.com/products.html
(Note that all plants have "z;" at the beginning of the product name.)

All our plants are Certified Organic and grown in compost-based potting soil. Our plants have never been sprayed (not even with Organic options), and have never been spoonfed soluble fertilizer. We do recommend hardening our plants off with 3-5 days of full-sun and wind before planting into your garden.

All plants are $4/4 inch pot or $4/4-pack. Orders over $80 take 20% discount.
If you are a CSA member, you already have insider access to plant details/ordering.

We'll have strawberries in the CSA next week (if the kids don't eat them all)!

Our strawberries, like everything else we grow, are Certified Organic. Like everything else we grow, they are also never sprayed with any pesticide, fungicide, herbicide, or any other toxin. We also never use high-solubility fertilizers, instead relying on soil biology, compost, and soil amendments like feathermeal and alfalfa meal, to supply our crops with the nutrition and health they need.

Our strawberries are variety: Flavorfest, which have a moderate sweetness, but a full strawberry flavor. We plant rooted strawberry runner tips as plugs in early fall, so we can have a harvest the following spring. We have propagated our own strawberry tips the last 2 years (our only 2 seasons with strawberries), from runner tips from healthy plants, using a farm-built intermittent mist propagation table. If all goes well, we will sell plants this fall so you can grow your own delicious strawberries.

Our strawberry crop looks fabulous and we should have strawberries available to our CSA members in about 2-3 weeks.

For me (Aaron), "late winter" has always been synonymous with "greenhouse." Renovating our 18'x86' heated greenhouse was the first project I did when I came back to the farm in 2021. My dad built this greenhouse around the time I was born, and bent the bows/arches by hand around a dairy silo. Our greenhouse now has electric fans, a modern thermostat controlled wood stove, and roll-up sides for ventilation. And we're still growing beautiful plants in it 30 years later.

As a boy, I mixed many batches of potting soil: equal parts peat, sand, and rich garden soil or compost, with a shovelful of lime, a double handful of greensand, and water to consistency. Over the last 5 years I tried several different pre-mixed compost-based potting soils from Vermont Compost, and Ohio Earth Foods, with excellent success.

This year we are mixing our own potting soil with proprietary ratios: Peat, Charlie's Compost (a Kentucky-made product), perlite, parboiled rice hulls, kelp meal, azomite, lime, rock phosphate, and humates. Making our own blend allows us to match the soil nutrition/texture to the specific crop. It seems to be working - plants don't lie.

We'll have plants available to order starting next week. If you are a CSA member, you'll get regular updates and can order through our CSA system. Those of you who aren't CSA members can order by message, call, text, email, or drop in. *Do note we have a new business phone number listed on the page.*

Our garden has worms! Earthworms, that is. They're easy to spot at night, but they're very hard to photograph.

Earthworms are valuable nutrient cyclers, feeding on old plant material and smaller subterranean microscopic bugs
From their food, earthworms produce a compost that is ready to feed crop plants. Earthworms are a non-native specie to North America, but we're happy to host them nonetheless.

Our healthy earthworm population is a byproduct of our minimal tillage, and extensive cover cropping to provide a constant food source.
