Imagine being upset at the cost of eggs and never being educated to understand the difference in the quality you get when you buy local farm fresh eggs vs "store washed" eggs. Store eggs are washed which removes the bloom that protects the egg from bacteria. Store eggs can also be up to 60 days old. Stores have 30 days to sell them from when packaged and farmers have up to 30 days to package them once laid. Store eggs are higher in cholesterol and saturated fat and have lower amounts of omega-3 fatty acids which are super important for our day-to-day functioning.
You get the quality you pay for and many backyard flock owners are not price gouging for their eggs out here. Most of us are barely breaking even. We simply enjoy the joy we get from our flock. I would rather know the product I am consuming and that the animal producing it is happy and truly healthy.
