So the farm that we own is about 150 years old. There are three barns, one that is about 40 years old, one that is probably about a hundred years old and one that is original to the property!

This is the year that we are officially finish cleaning up and restoring the oldest barn. Which naturally begins with a big clean out of ancient corn cobs 🤣

Once this Barn is cleaned out it will be used for additional chicken breeding flocks, and Storage on the upper levels which are very cool.

Not sure if there are many things easier or more satisfying to make than homemade pasta! Only takes about 30min including time to let it rest after kneading

We've been experimenting with alternative flours around here, like Einkorn and Red Wheat after I received a flour grinder for Christmas!

What are y'all doing to fight off the late winter blues on gloomy days?

This greenhouse guardian, known as Bobby Bones, materialized on our doorstep unannounced over a year ago, initially only a bag of bones and lacking teeth or a tail, but possessing a profound love for all.❤️

Notably, even our four-year-old could pet and carry him effortlessly due to his gentle nature, while his purrs were audible from a distance!

As one of several barn cats on our farm, Bobby Bones distinguishes himself by following me during my chores and demanding to be kept warm under my coat in the winter.

Finishing up the greenhouse interior setup a little late, but better late than never! Those large red barrels are being filled up with water, this practice is called thermal mass heating. The water in the barrels heats up during the day as the sun blasts the greenhouse, that warm water then passively heats the greenhouse at night.

I've already started all of our hot peppers, sweet peppers, celery, onions, and broccoli in the kitchen but those will be moving out here now that hopefully the dangerously cold temperatures are over for the season!

What are these deep freeze days good for? Experimentation! Genny and I tried grinding our own flour from whole red wheat berries, and we made bread and pasta from it.

Tomorrow we're going to start making birdhouses from the birdhouse gourds we grew last summer which have been curing for 4 months in the old barn breezeway! They were soaked yesterday in vinegar and water for an hour, and then scrubbed and scraped.

It might look like nothing happens around the farm this time of year, but life goes on! Rabbit manure is piled on top of sleeping garden beds, which will be tilled in when spring platning begins.

Hundreds of chickens are being grown out for processing or laying, and rabbit breeding plans are well underway for February!

Hundreds of seed varieties have been saved from last year or bought, and the dates to start them in the greenhouse have been set.

Winter is a great time to work on not only plans for the future but infrastructure as well! Currently Andre is in the process of building out huge bins on wheels so that we can buy bulk chicken feed, and our greenhouse is being outfitted to keep warm our little seed starts.
