On Sunday, we had our linear appraisal! We are so happy with our scores, and we learned so much about things to look for and what to choose when breeding for what strengths and what weaknesses. Our appraiser was wonderful and patient with all of our questions, extremely knowledgeable and experienced, and she took the time to explain to all our 4H kids what she was looking at and why (which helped us adults too! 🤣). She reminded us that focusing on the basics, straight legs, appropriate rear leg angulation, strong shoulders, strong bones, need to be a focus of any breeding program to ensure your goats can stand the test of time. There’s a reason we look for certain traits to breed for, and it’s so we can have the highest milk production in a goat who can live their entire lifespan of 12-14 years, and be productive during that time!
We had 4 goats that were eligible for linear appraisal, since the rest of our herd were too young.
⭐️ 4*BAR*E Z Razzle (3 years old), purchased from Brushwood Creek Nubians, scored an 86VVGV
⭐️ Fischer FF V Red Runway (3 year old buck) scored an 88VVV
⭐️ INB Acres Smoke and Flames (yearling buck) scored an 82GGA
⭐️ Midnight Milkers Nubian Farm MDNT AL Forever the Kharacter (yearling buck) scored an 84VGG
These scores mean that we are heading in the right direction to breed strong and correct goats!
A huge THANK YOU to our appraiser! And a huge THANK YOU to Goat House Farm Inc for hosting this event, and to Lauren Harmon for helping organize and run it!
