For Colleen and Casey Dauw, farming has always been about more than raising livestock.

Alongside their seven children, they have spent the last decade building Dancer Creek Farm in Dexter, raising animals while raising a family deeply connected to the land and their food source.

Recently, the family transitioned to a centennial farm where livestock had been absent for many years. Their vision is simple: return grazing animals to the landscape where they belong and continue the tradition of teaching the next generation where food comes from.

As they work toward growing a 100% grass-fed cattle herd, Dancer Creek Farm remains grounded in the belief that healthy food begins with healthy land, healthy animals, and strong families.

As Colleen puts it, there is nothing more rewarding than gathering around a table and giving thanks for a meal well earned together.

Throughout June we'll be sharing more about Dancer Creek Farm, the work they're doing, and the role they play in building a stronger local food system.

Last Tuesday, we gathered around the table for our May community dinner — and it was one for the books. 🍖🌿

We served up birria made from 100% grass fed beef, and the result was exactly what these dinners are all about: incredible food, good people, and a shared appreciation for where it all comes from.

Birria has roots in slow, intentional cooking — and that lines up perfectly with how we approach our meat. Raised right, sourced locally, and worth savoring.

If you missed this one, stay close — more dinners are coming. 🫶

When you purchase local food, you're supporting more than a farm. You're supporting generations of stewardship.

This month we're excited to introduce Whitney Farmstead, a family farm in Webster Township where Malaika Whitney and Matthew Haarklou raise 100% grass-fed beef and lamb, pastured pork and chicken, and produce traditional wood-fired maple syrup.

The land has been in Malaika's family since 1900, when her great-great-grandfather purchased the original 40 acres. More than a century later, Whitney Farmstead continues that legacy through regenerative grazing, rotational pasture management, and a commitment to producing food in a way that improves the health of the land.

Their livestock move regularly across diverse perennial pastures, helping build soil health, support wildlife habitat, and create resilient ecosystems while producing nutrient-dense food.

For Malaika and Matthew, farming isn't simply a business. It's a way of caring for a place they call home and sharing that stewardship with their community.

Throughout June, we'll be sharing more of the stories, practices, and products that make Whitney Farmstead such an important part of our local food system.

If you are on a few acres and are allowed to have livestock, why not graze some sheep and cows around your property instead of having a gigantic, perfectly manicured lawn? You could produce plenty of meat for your family and neighbors on just a few acres!

There’s a reason burger season feels different once Michigan finally warms up.

The grill comes back out.
Friends linger outside longer.
Kids run through the yard barefoot.
Dinner gets simpler — and somehow better.

At Lane View Farm, burger season starts with their Black Angus beef, raised right on the farm and ground for the kind of burgers that actually taste like beef should.

Rich flavor.
Good texture.
Real marbling.
No mystery.

Just local cattle raised with care by people who take pride in every part of the process.

You don’t need complicated recipes when the ingredients already carry the flavor.

A hot grill.
A good burger.
Maybe fresh tomatoes in a few more weeks.

That’s the beginning of summer around here.

Behind every strong farm is usually a strong family.

At Lane View Farm, Ridge and Lindsay have built something bigger than a business — they’ve built a gathering place.

Their work stretches beyond raising livestock:

hosting dinners,
creating seasonal experiences,
welcoming families,
partnering with neighboring farms,
and building spaces where people can celebrate agriculture.

That spirit — collaboration over competition — is what makes local food systems stronger.

Farms aren’t islands.
They’re neighbors.
They’re partnerships.
They’re communities.

And Lane View Farm is helping create exactly that kind of rural community.

We’re grateful to work alongside them.

Today we visited Custom Cut — the skilled team that takes locally raised animals and turns them into the beautiful cuts you find in your Washtenaw Meats order. This is the step that doesn't always get the spotlight, but it matters just as much as what happens on the farm.

Careful, skilled butchery. Local partnerships. Transparency from pasture to package. That's the Washtenaw Meats difference.

Curious where your meat comes from? We'll always show you. Shop the link in our bio to order locally raised meat.
