It's little but the first pickin of bush beans put the biggest smile on my face π. Honestly it all does when I see all our hard work paying off and growing.
So many people have rolled their eyes and laughed at the sentence " We're building our homestead". To them its just us owning chickens and having a garden. It is so much more than that. I have a plan, a big plan that we're working in on 5 acres. So we can be so self sufficient that we aren't buying even half the stuff from the grocery store. ( Really it's so we can buy more seeds, critters, lumber and jeep parts for the toy π€£π€£, just kidding, kinda). But really it is just the start of hopefully something big one day. That'll help our community and then some.
I have had so many dreams of what I wanted to do as an adult..
When I was little, I wanted to be a country music star, and bring Grandpa and Grandma to the Grand Ol Opery, grandpa would teach me chords and songs in the back yard while we were messing with chickens. With a side job of being a chef and opening up a truckers rest stop with good home made style food, because as my daddy was out driving I always wondered if he ate a good meal for all those miles he drove. Or if he found a little spot that had that homey feeling 700 miles away where someones Granny was making the gravy recipe and passing it on.
Then it was to become a vet, we usually always doctored our own critters at home, unless it was something that was just out of our hands. It just didn't have that kick when I thought about it as I got older. I needed more challenges.
I wanted to be a teacher, but the good up above knew I'd be threatening to whoop some b***y with some of these kids these days lol little heathens. I hated the idea of being stuck inside constantly... Never was for me.
I have always loved flowers, and growing things. I loved working in the floral shop, being able to be so creative and not having to always make the same thing over and over or having the freedom to come up with something that fit the idea some would share. I loved it. The people, the stories they shared...
I've always loved helping other's and what better way than with veggies, fruits, and floral happiness??
I knew I needed a job that would allow me to still feed my inner dirt queen π€£π€£. She gets crabby when she is stuck inside and not running wild like the butterflies in the meadows. I knew I wanted to be able to grow my own food and take care of my family one day.
I haven't done this alone. Me and my honey have worked on this for the last 3 years, and in the middle of the 4th learning so much together, I get to teach him things the flowers, what can't be planted next to this or that, he teaches me welds and vehicles and patience. You don't see him much on here but he is standing next to me on this big dream, every idea I bring to him, he will help pick out the pros and cons and does his best to help make these come true. He's never said no lol.. π¬π
This isn't just a joke or a hobby.... This is knowing when crap hits the fan, we won't be running around worrying about having this or that..... Because we're building something solid to take care of us.
So the next time you roll your eyes or try to make fun of someone just because they have chickens and a garden, that is their homestead. It is their own self sufficient spot. Maybe ask before you judge.
Happy Hump Day everyone. Stay cool out there, make sure you're hydrating. Check on the elderly that live alone.
