DID YOU KNOW? 🥛 🐄

Meet Dolly, one of the most unique cows at Red Barn Farm!

Dolly is a Holstein, the breed most commonly known for dairy production. But unlike most Holsteins, Dolly will never produce milk.

Why? Dolly was born as a twin to a male calf. In cattle, when a female calf shares the womb with a bull calf, hormones and blood vessels are often shared during development. This condition is called a freemartin.

More than 90% of female calves born twin to a bull are infertile and unable to have calves of their own. Since cows must have a calf before they can produce milk, freemartins typically do not enter dairy production.

While Dolly couldn’t become a dairy cow, she found an important purpose here at Red Barn Farm. ❤️

We welcomed Dolly into our agricultural education program because we are passionate about teaching others where their food comes from and sharing the fascinating science behind agriculture. Today, Dolly helps us educate visitors about dairy cattle, genetics, reproduction, and the many unique stories that exist on every farm.

Not every cow has the same job—and Dolly’s job is helping us inspire the next generation of farmers and agricultural leaders. 🐄🌾

🪿 Did you know porch geese actually have roots in real farm life?

Long before they became beloved porch decorations, geese were valued on farms as natural alarm systems. Their protective instincts and unmistakable honks helped alert farmers when something was out of place.

That sounds a lot like our own Shirley! 🪿❤️ If something changes around the farm, Shirley is usually the first to let us know.

Today, porch geese are a nostalgic reminder of those farm traditions—and they’re making a big comeback!

You can find our solid concrete porch geese at Locust Ace Hardware, available painted or unpainted if you’d like to create your own masterpiece. 🎨
