Are you truly managing your bee colony if you don't perform mite washes?

Some backyard beekeepers claim to maintain hygienic bees without treatments, asserting they have negligible mite infestations. Although it's not entirely impossible, particularly with certain bee lines bred for hygienic traits, most beekeepers don't engage in selective breeding beyond the initial queen they receive. Open-air mating, supersedure queens, or emergency queens can lead to a significant decline in hygienic behavior if the drones originate from non-hygienic colonies. Furthermore, environmental factors, weather conditions, and colony behavior can fluctuate over time, potentially causing mite populations to surge.
