🙂 Story time.....👉Saturday we visited Fields Restored in Oregon, Illinois to learn more about the serviceberry. Our mission: see about making jam from it in the future. Native to our region, serviceberry is an emerging field crop with benefits to the environment. Because it's well adapted to our climate it requires less input, less maintenance and is more likely to succeed in our roller coaster weather. We met with other growers and experts from Savanna Institute who educated the crowd on sustainable farming practices. We toured the fields and talked about jam as a market opportunity for these types of fruits. We appreciate the time given to this event by the farmers at Fields Restored Demonstration Farm, which "features alley cropping, a windbreak, silvopasture, and a multifunctional riparian buffer; four of the five agroforestry practices supported by the USDA." 💚
