Earth Day brings big feelings. We are all increasingly isolated from the natural world by the pace of our daily lives. Screens (like this one!) connect us to each other, but put a little more distance between our gaze and the wild world nearby. However your day is spent, sitting down to a meal is a comforting bridge back to nature, and the clearest, simplest ways that the land around us nourishes us all. We are grateful every day, for everyone who chooses to share that moment of re-connection with us by bringing home the food that we have coaxed from the Earth. Whether we convinced you to try turnips at Chefscape Farmer's market last week, or you're eagerly awaiting the start of the new Farm Stand season May 4, or you've been a CSA shareholder since the beginning, thank you for supporting local agriculture and organic farming practices. Thank you for eating seasonally, reducing carbon emissions from food transport, consuming pastured livestock, and protecting our pollinators from pesticides. Thank you for believing in the vision of a working farm and a vibrant suburban community growing alongside one another. Beginning with these small choices at home, we can change the world!

Our first year farming here, we forked everything. Potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, garlic, sometimes beets. But thanks to @msnowfarms research and foresight for scaling up, we have awesome implements for that now. These new potatoes will be in shares tomorrow! Remember when we (or @ddramby ) posted a video of the goats chowing down on spiny amaramth/pigweed? Land that has been over grazed by cattle and horses - who selectively eat around it - can get overtaken by that pesky weed. We inherited it so here we are now, after chickens, goats, pigs, goats, chickens (not necessarily in that order). Will be interesting to see what pops up first and throughout the spring. Meanwhile, in Turkey Town, a fun fact. Did you know that the color of a turkey's head and throat will change according to its mood? Red heads seen here are indicative of them not loving being followed and filmed. A blue head means they are content, even excited and happy.

We had the luxury of a year.5 of cover crops on a field that was in commodity crops and sod for many years - a fall mix followed by a summer mix followed by crimson clover and self-seeded cereals. All of it was rolled and drilled without tilling. There's some lignatious material under the green clover, and we'll mow, spread minerals and turn under somewhat green before summer people crops. We have high hopes to make this a more regular part of our rotation, and to add chickens to the mix as well. Got to give some to get some. #regenerativeagriculture ?
