In petroleum engineering, a well is a drilled hole in the ground designed to access oil, gas, or water reservoirs. Wells are classified based on purpose, trajectory, production type, and completion method. Understanding well types is crucial for designing drilling programs, selecting equipment, and planning production.

โ‘  Based on Purpose

1๏ธโƒฃ Exploration Wells

Drilled to discover new hydrocarbon reserves.

Typically shallow-to-medium depth depending on seismic data.

Example: Wildcat wells drilled in untested formations.

2๏ธโƒฃ Appraisal Wells

Follow-up wells drilled after a discovery to define the size and quality of the reservoir.

Provide data on porosity, permeability, and fluid characteristics.

3๏ธโƒฃ Production Wells

Designed to extract hydrocarbons efficiently.

Equipped with casing, tubing, and completion systems to maximize flow.

May be designed for primary, secondary, or tertiary recovery.

4๏ธโƒฃ Injection Wells

Used for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) or reservoir management.

Types:

Water injection wells โ€“ maintain reservoir pressure.

Gas injection wells โ€“ COโ‚‚ or natural gas for pressure support or miscible flooding.

---

โ‘ก Based on Trajectory

1๏ธโƒฃ Vertical Wells

Traditional wells drilled straight down.

Simpler design, low deviation.

Common in onshore, shallow reservoirs.

2๏ธโƒฃ Deviated / Directional Wells

Wells drilled at an angle from vertical to reach specific reservoir targets.

Used to avoid obstacles or reach multiple targets from a single pad.

3๏ธโƒฃ Horizontal Wells

Wells drilled to follow the reservoir formation horizontally.

Increase contact with the reservoir, improving production rates.

Common in shale gas, tight oil, and extended reach wells.

---

โ‘ข Based on Production Type

1๏ธโƒฃ Oil Wells

Designed primarily to produce crude oil.

May produce associated gas as a byproduct.

2๏ธโƒฃ Gas Wells

Designed to produce natural gas, sometimes with condensate.

Typically require gas handling facilities at the surface.

3๏ธโƒฃ Water Wells

Mostly for water injection or disposal, not hydrocarbon production.

---

โ‘ฃ Based on Completion and Equipment

1๏ธโƒฃ Open-Hole Wells

The production zone is not cased, and the reservoir rock is exposed.

Requires sand control methods to prevent formation material from entering the well.

2๏ธโƒฃ Cased and Perforated Wells

Production zone cased and cemented, then perforated to allow fluids to enter.

Most common in conventional reservoirs.

3๏ธโƒฃ Gravel Pack Wells

Cased and perforated with gravel packs to prevent sand production in unconsolidated formations.

4๏ธโƒฃ Horizontal / Multilateral Wells

Complex wells with lateral branches from the main bore to maximize reservoir exposure.

Used in tight formations, offshore reservoirs, or shale plays.

๐ŸšซDrilling problems are divided into two types:
1- Problems resulting from the stratigraphic conditions and the content and nature of the layers we pe*****te.
2- Problems resulting from the drilling method used, as well as the elements involved in completing the well.
โ†”๏ธ Drilling Fluid Leakage:
Drilling fluid leakage is the total or partial entry of drilling fluid into the open layer of the well.
ใ€ฝ๏ธ โ“๐Ÿ™„
1- Natural Cause:
This results from low stratigraphic pressure.
2- Technical Cause:
This results from the high hydrostatic pressure of the drilling fluid, resulting from the high specific gravity if the drilling fluid is stationary. However, if the drilling fluid is moving, the pressure resulting from friction is added to the previous pressure. Therefore, the causes of leakage are:
- Drilling fluid abundance.
- Drilling fluid viscosity.
- Specific gravity of drilling fluid.
โ˜ฃ๏ธ Stratified fluid surge:.... The involuntary surge of stratified fluids from the open field of the well into the well due to the stratified pressure being greater than the pressure inside the well.
โ˜ฃ๏ธ Oil and gas surge:.... The specific gravity of both oil and gas is less than the specific gravity of the drilling fluid. Therefore, when they mix with the drilling fluid, the opposing pressure on the stratum decreases, causing the fluids to surge and potentially causing a wellbore.
โ˜ฃ๏ธ Drill pipe blockage:.... Drill pipe blockage means preventing it from moving vertically or rotating, i.e., stopping work.
โ˜ฃ๏ธ Well wall collapse and rupture:.... The collapse of the well wall occurs due to the defect caused during drilling by removing a portion of the rock. This results in a resultant combination of horizontal and vertical forces (from bottom to top). The resultant of these forces works to restore balance to the stratum and eliminate the defect.
# Drill bit breakage at the bottom of the well:
Reasons for drill bit breakage:
Due to poor information availability when drilling exploratory wells.
Due to operating in a region with severe tectonics, where the lithological column cannot be accurately determined.....Due to incorrect use of the drill bit, such as using a drill bit in soft rock to drill hard rock, or loading directly onto the drill bit.
Due to using a drill bit for a longer time than necessary in the hope of drilling a few more meters.

Field visit to enhance practical experience within the framework of developing technical cadres in the oil sector. Engineer Majak Arop made a field visit to the NDS nile drilling and services area. The visit aimed to encourage and empower workers. This step comes within the framework of keenness to develop the technical skills of workers and enhance their knowledge of modern applications in the field of drilling, which contributes to raising the efficiency of performance.

ESP bypass systems, commonly called Y-tools, are used to gain access to the wellbore below an electrical submersible pumping (ESP) system without having to retrieve it. This enables stimulation, production logging, testing, and interventions on wireline or coiled tubing without having to deploy a workover rig and pull the completion.

1- Enable wireline and coiled tubing operations below the ESP.
The bypass conduit enables easy access to the wellbore below the ESP using coiled tubing or wireline.

2-Log, survey, or intervene without pulling the ESP.
The ESP remains in place while logging runs are conducted and during coiled tubing interventions.

3-Run a second ESP below the first to meet production goals.
A second ESP can be run through the bypass conduit to enable additional production from the well.

4-Bridge plug setting for water shutoff and Well work without pulling the ESP
