Pope Leo XIV has urged inmates at Bata Prison in Equatorial Guinea to remain optimistic despite the challenges of prison life.

In his Wednesday, April 22, message at the facility, the Holy Father reflected on the deeper meaning of hope and personal change, acknowledging the challenges prisoners face and urging them to use the prison as a space for reflection, reconciliation, and growth.

“Although prison may seem like a lonely and desolate place… it can also become a space for reflection, reconciliation, and personal growth,” the Holy Father said.

He added, “Life is not defined solely by one’s mistakes, which are often the result of difficult and complex circumstances. There is always the possibility to start over, learn, and become a new person.”

“You are not alone. Your families love you and are waiting for you. Many people outside these walls are praying for you. If any of you fear being abandoned by everyone, know that God will never abandon you, and that the Church will stand by your side,” he added.

The Pope assured the inmates of God’s unconditional love despite their past mistakes.
