VIDEO: While speaking with reporters aboard Air Force One, President Donald Trump was asked about his $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS over the leaking of his 2019–2020 tax returns by a former IRS contractor. A reporter asked Trump, “You’re suing the federal government over your taxes. Is it fair to ask the American people to pay for that?” Trump replied, “Well, anything I win, I’m going to give 100% to charity.” The reporter followed up, asking, “But that still take it from the American people” Trump responded, “No, no, because they give money to charity. We give away $40 billion a year to charity… our government. You know, our government gives away $40 billion-plus a year to charity.” Trump did not specify which charity would receive the money, but said it would be a “really good charity.” This comes as some have raised concerns and questions about two legal cases President Trump currently has against the federal government. One is against the DOJ over the raid at Mar-a-Lago, in which he is seeking $230 million. The other is the lawsuit against the IRS, which seeks $10 billion in damages. President Trump has acknowledged there may be a conflict of interest, noting that, as president of the United States, he is effectively “making a deal” with himself, which he said can make things “tricky.”
