Durags are usually made from satin which helps to protect your head from sunlight or air or anything that can mess up your hair.

During the 1960s, the durag gained in popularity as a fashion statement.
When you look at the history of durags, they carry a lot of weight on top of being a fashion piece. But beyond that, they have a lot of practical benefits as well.

Many African Americans men use do-rags to maintain the wave patterns in their hair. After brushing, oil sheen or grease is used on the hair, which is then wrapped in a do-rag overnight to keep the wave pattern. Some gang members wear do-rags to represent their gang colors.
