Propagating houseplants in a glass of water is how plant collections grow quickly without spending anything. 🌱
Cut a stem just below a node, remove the lower leaves, and place it in a clear container on a bright shelf — most common houseplants develop a visible root system within a fortnight. One thing worth knowing: clear glass lets you watch root development, but some species root faster in an opaque container, as roots naturally grow away from light.
Houseplants that propagate reliably in water:
- Pothos: roots in 7 days, tolerates low light, the most forgiving starting point
- Tradescantia: fast-growing, a single stem fills a pot in three weeks
- Monstera deliciosa: cut below an aerial node, one substantial root forms in 2 weeks
- Philodendron: all varieties work; Brasil is among the quickest
- Ivy (Hedera helix): use young, flexible stems — woody stems root poorly
- Begonia: a single leaf with its stalk is enough, fine roots appear in 10 days
- Papyrus: submerge an umbel upside down and plantlets form directly from it
- Pilea peperomioides: lateral offsets root in 8 days in 2 cm of water
- Spider plant: the small rosettes on runners root in 5 days with no assistance
- Syngonium: cut below a visible aerial node, roots appear in 10 days
Pot on once the root network reaches a minimum of 5 cm — the transition to compost is a small shock, so water well through the first week. 🌿
