Matcha latte but make it extra. 🍵🍌

Took my usual cup of Barista Blend and tried the viral matcha banana pudding using the iconic banana pudding from The result? A creamy, dreamy combo that’s so worth trying.

Naoki’s Barista Blend is perfect for this dessert like latte. The matcha flavor doesn’t get drowned out by the pudding. It still shines through with its bold and smooth taste. 🤤

Matcha Diaries Entry #3: Kanbayashi Shunsho Hijirimukashi 🍵

Disclaimer: This review is based on my personal taste and experience.

If you're after a matcha that leans more toward soft, nutty, and slightly chocolaty notes, Hijirimukashi might just be your pick. It’s a beautifully balanced tea that offers a different kind of depth, with less focus on umami and more on delicate complexity.

The powder itself was a vibrant green, which is always a promising start. On first sip, it leans slightly bitter but quickly settles into a creamy, smooth profile. There's a little bit of sweetness that lingers with subtle notes of nuttiness and a hint of cocoa. Umami is minimal in this blend, making it a great choice for those who prefer matcha that’s less savory and more mellow.

As a latte (I used Oatside oat milk), the nutty and chocolaty flavors really came forward. I chose not to add sweetener since Oatside tends to be sweet enough for me, but if you prefer a very sweet latte, you might want to add a bit of your favorite sweetener.

This matcha is ideal if you're looking for a gentle, well-balanced cup with soft flavors and a sweet finish. Perfect for anyone who enjoys the nuttier, more dessert-like side of matcha. 💚

Matcha Diaries Entry #2: Naoki Barista Blend 🍵

Disclaimer: This review is based on my personal taste and experience.

I’m honestly shocked by how good this is, especially considering the mixed reviews I’ve seen online about Naoki. When I first opened the pouch, the powder had a slight vegetal and grassy scent that made me a bit hesitant. But once I turned it into a latte, none of that came through in the taste. It was smooth, clean, and very solid as a regular matcha latte.

What surprised me even more is how it compares to other matcha powders with a similar lighter green color. Many with this kind of hue tend to be grassy and bitter, but this one has none of that. The flavor is well-balanced and mellow without being dull.

Even with using less powder, you can still get a rich drink, which makes it very cost-effective. I followed the brand’s recipe and 2 tsp yielded nearly 250ml of matcha, which is quite a generous serving. For a barista blend, I now understand why it’s a bestseller.

One thing to note: this blend doesn’t have much natural sweetness, so you may want to add a sweetener depending on your preference.

I truly didn’t expect much, but this might become my go-to daily matchas. Great for beginners or anyone who prefers a smoother, less intense matcha experience.

Also, the end photo does not do the color justice, it’s actually much greener and less yellow in person! ☺️

Confused about which matcha to get? We get it especially with brands like Kanbayashi Shunsho and Naoki that aren’t as well known as Marukyu Koyamaen. That’s why we’re starting a Mini Matcha Review series to share our honest thoughts on different matcha we’ve tried. No fluff, just real talk. We’re just too lazy to create a TikTok matcha review account 😅 Just what you need to know to before our drop.

First up: Kanbayashi Shunsho Babamukashi

Babamukashi is the third-highest matcha offering from Kanbayashi Shunsho and I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect. But it turned out to be a really pleasant surprise. Right out of the pack, it smells a bit vegetal or grassy but thankfully none of that comes through in the taste, whether as usucha or a latte. The color leans more toward the mellow green side.

As usucha, it’s smooth and well-balanced. There’s a clean vegetal flavor with a touch of umami, and no bitterness. It’s light and easy to drink tho not as bold as some other high-grade matcha but still satisfying.

With milk, the flavor mellows down. The vegetal notes disappear and it becomes creamy with a custard-like finish. It has a medium natural sweetness and I picked up subtle hints of dark chocolate and vanilla. You can add sweetener if you prefer a sweeter latte but it already is naturally sweet as is.

Stay tuned for more quick reviews coming your way! 🍵
