Feathered Babies on the farm!
We got a new rooster this year -Buddy - and he has ended our chick drought in spectacular fashion.
We weren’t really hoping for more chickens yet but:
Dusty (one of our most amazing mums and aunties - she’ll mother almost anything) was found on 9 eggs after three days of sitting - by then the eggs have started developing. So we let her sit. She hatched 5 live babies in very early spring.
Rudolph (our rebel bantam who doesn’t care about our rules) was found on 15 eggs in the long grass 25 meters from the coop. We don’t know how long she had already been sitting, and we figured they probably wouldn’t make it out there. She trooped 9 babies back to the coop last week.
Despite the oft-stated fact the black roosters only produce black offspring, we’ve been delighted with the range of colors we’ve gotten, especially since all the eggs hatched by Rudolph were hers!
