Found at the Southern Farmer’s Market in Invercargill, Masak Masak is a little food stall that’s big on flavour. The owners, Tabitha and Luke, are keen to share with you Malaysia’s number one obsession: FOOD! Malaysia is a melting pot of cultures; the country is largely made up of Malays, Chinese and Indians. The result? A delicious collision of flavours, aromas and textures. Spicy, sweet, salty,
sour, umami...curries, noodles, rice, sweets, salads…deep fried, steamed, stir fried, stewed, fermented, poached…Malaysia’s culinary kaleidoscope will have you hooked! Hopefully, you’ll be a fan of Masak Masak too, with its homemade dishes lovingly prepared with authentic ingredients. To begin with, our menu will be small, but given time and support, we hope to offer you more and more Malaysian flavours. Right, time to “MAKAN”!! (“eat”)

Pssst…what’s with the name?
“Masak”, in the Malay language, means “to cook”. In addition, “masak masak” is a Malaysian colloquial slang endearingly used when referring to the children’s game of “playing house”, or to be more precise, when children pretend to cook meals. Indeed, Tabitha’s enthusiasm in making and sharing food began in her childhood days. Whether it was meddling with toy kitchen utensils at home or digging up muddy holes in the playground and stirring in leaves, twigs and – most importantly – the Insect of the Day, she was always interested in concocting delicious dishes for friends and family. This interest continues to this day: Together with her husband, Luke, they’re excited in bringing you the authentic flavours of Malaysia while injecting in a wee bit of experimentation…because you’re never too old to be playful!
