The life sentence that was given to Nnamdi Kanu some minutes ago made me sit down and think. I keep asking myself how a government that was capable of picking him up from another country cannot rescue kid.napped students from t£rr0r!sts inside our own land. The same government cannot arrest the terr0r!sts and ban.dits who boldly post their videos on social media without fear. It makes you wonder what really matters in this country and what does not.
The moment we begin to tell ourselves the truth in this country is the moment we will begin to see real change. But sadly, many people choose to act like nothing is happening. Some people are saying it does not concern them. Some are celebrating because they feel the matter does not touch their region. Oh,he’s an Igbo man and deserves whatever he got, abi. And yet they forget that the real issue is bigger than one man. They forget that we are all being played. They forget that this country continues to show us that human lives mean very little.
We keep pretending. We keep moving on like everything is normal. But is it until it gets to our own doors that we will finally understand that our lives are being played with. Is it until we feel the pain directly. Will we still laugh and joke when it is our own children or our own families.
What happened today is not just about Nnamdi Kanu. It is a reflection of the kind of system we are living in. A system that acts when it wants to act. A system that looks away when ordinary citizens are crying for help. A system that can go across borders to pick one man but cannot cross a forest to rescue innocent children.
I am not here to support v!0lence. I am not here to defend wrongdoing. I am only saying that what we are seeing is not ordinary. It is pai.nful to watch a country continue to move without direction. It is pai.nful to see how divided we have become. We do not ask questions again. We do not hold anyone accountable again. We just pick sides and close our eyes.
Today reminded me that nothing is certain in this country. Today reminded me that we must stop pretending. We must stop acting like this is how life is supposed to be. We must start speaking the truth no matter how uncomfortable it is.
We are all living in this same country. What affects one person has a way of coming back to affect all of us. We cannot continue like this. We cannot continue to act like our lives do not matter. Something is wrong somewhere and we all know it. The pai.nful part is that many people will still pretend not to see it.
I just pray for wisdom. I pray for safety. I pray for a country where justice is not selective. I pray for a country where every citizen matters. Because right now, it is clear that we are not there yet.
