Day 21: Safe Food Choices Start at the Market
Who remembers seeing fresh Sawa fish displayed in the market without ice, sometimes because there was no electricity? How many of us can relate to this? 🤔
But it’s not just about fish. Have you also noticed meat, poultry and other perishable foods being displayed for long periods without proper cooling?
Fresh fish, meat and other perishable foods need proper temperature control. When left in warm conditions for too long, harmful microorganisms can multiply and make the food unsafe.
Even dried foods need proper storage. Dried fish, for example, should be kept dry and protected from moisture, which can encourage mould growth.
As consumers, let’s pay attention to how food is stored before buying it. Look out for vendors who take proper steps to keep food safe.
Remember, food safety doesn’t end with choosing fresh food. How it is stored matters too🎯
