The Democratic Republic of Congo kept their World Cup dream alive after edging Nigeria 4–3 on penalties, following a tense 1–1 draw after extra time, to win the African qualifying play-offs in Morocco last night.

D.R. Congo will now look ahead to Thursday’s draw for the inter-confederation play-off in March, where six nations will battle for the final two slots at the expanded 48-team World Cup.

Captain Chancel Mbemba scored the decisive penalty, capping off a dramatic finish in which substitute goalkeeper Timothy Fayulu—introduced just a minute before the shootout—made two crucial saves that swung the contest in Congo’s favour.

Frank Onyeka had given Nigeria a dream start with a third-minute opener, but Meschack Elia levelled matters, and the two sides remained inseparable through extra time.

The Rabat mini-tournament featured the best runners-up from the nine African qualifying groups. The winners of those groups had already secured automatic tickets to next year’s World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States.
