β οΈ Eyewitness Story: The Sapele Incident (As Told by a Resident)
I never thought a normal morning in Sapele would turn into something that would shake the entire town.
That morning, a young man was seen pushing a motorcycle to start his day. He looked like someone trying to earn an honest living. But some Aboki's in the area, already angry from a recent robbery incident where several motorcycles were allegedly stolen the night before, stopped him suddenly.
They questioned him harshly β asking where he got the bike from. He explained calmly that it belonged to his brother and that he only used it when his brother was not working. In panic, he even called his brother to come and confirm.
But before the brother could arrive, tension had already risen. The crowd misunderstood the situation, believing he was connected to the earlier theft. In the confusion and anger, things turned tragic, and the young man lost his life before the truth could be confirmed.
When his brother finally arrived with documents and proof of ownership, it was already too late. The realization brought shock and regret, but nothing could reverse what had happened.
News spread quickly across Sapele. The town became tense. Youths protested, some attacked shops belonging to traders they believed were connected to the incident, and fear spread everywhere. The local authorities stepped in, and eventually restrictions were placed on motorcycle operations in parts of the town.
Today, many residents now move mostly on foot. Commercial tricycles are overcrowded, and daily life has become harder. People are still calling for calm, justice, and proper investigation so that peace can return to Sapele.
