How to Know When Your Female Pig Is Ready to Breed

A young farmer once told me, "My young female pig has been with the male pig for two weeks and nothing happened." I asked him a few questions, and the problem was clear. He put them together on the wrong days. She was not on heat, and he did not know what to look for.

When your female pig is on heat, that is the time to breed her. If you miss it, you lose weeks. You keep feeding her, but no piglets are coming.

So what should you look out for? First, she becomes restless. She walks around more, she may make more noise, and she may try to climb on other pigs. Then you will see that her private part is red and swollen. She may also eat less than normal, and this surprises many new farmers.

But the clearest sign is this, press her back with your hand. If she stands still and does not move away, she is ready. Farmers call this standing heat.

Do not depend on your memory. Write down the date every time she comes on heat. A pig comes on heat again after about three weeks, so your notebook will tell you when to expect the next one.

If you are not sure, ask. An experienced farmer or your vet can look at your pig and tell you in a few minutes what could take you weeks to learn alone.

Have you ever missed a heat? Tell us what happened in the comments, so we can all learn.

Which Pig Breed Is Best? It Depends on What You Want

When people come to buy pigs, the first thing many of them say is, "Give me the best breed." I always ask one question back: best for what? Most of them stop and think, because they have never asked themselves that.

There is no one best breed. Large White pigs grow fast, and the mothers are good at looking after their piglets, so they are a strong choice if you want quick weight gain. Landrace pigs have long bodies and give birth to big litters, which is great if you want more piglets every time a sow farrows. Duroc pigs are hardy and give very good meat, so they do well when conditions are not perfect and when you care about the quality of the pork.

I have seen a farmer buy the most popular breed because everyone was talking about it, only to find out it did not fit his plan at all. He wanted pigs to fatten and sell, but he bought pigs that are better for breeding. He did not lose everything, but he lost time, and in farming, time is money.

So before you spend a single naira, sit down and decide your goal. Do you want to fatten and sell? Do you want to breed and sell piglets? Or do you want to do both? When your goal is clear, the right breed becomes easy to choose.

So tell us, what is your goal: fattening, breeding, or both? Drop your answer in the comments and we will help you choose.

Write It Down: The Simplest Way to Make More Money from Pigs

A few years ago, I asked a farmer friend how much profit he made from his last batch of pigs. He scratched his head and said, "I think I did okay." That was the whole answer. He could not tell me when he bought them, how much feed they ate, or what he sold them for. The money came in and the money went out, and he had no idea where it all went.

Here is the thing, you don't need software or a computer to fix this. A simple notebook is enough. Give every batch of pigs its own page, and write down the date you bought them, the feed you used and what it cost, the vaccines you gave, how much they weigh as they grow, and what you earned when you sold them. It takes five minutes after each task.

After a few months, that notebook starts talking to you. You will see which batch grew fast and which one ate a lot but stayed small. You will see which feed gave you the best weight for the money. And when you sell, you will know your real profit, not just a feeling.

So start with your next batch. One notebook, one pen, and a little honesty with yourself. Your future self will thank you.

Do you keep records for your pigs? Tell us in the comments how you do it.

Look at these guys. This is what a normal day looks like on our farm, lots of food, lots of naps, and a few of them fighting over the best spot in the shade.

We raise our pigs ourselves, and we don't rush it. Good feed, clean pens, and people who actually care how they're doing. You can taste the difference.

We've got piglets, growers, etc, available this weekend, but it goes fast, so if you want some, send us a message and we'll sort you out.

The quietest pen on the farm is the one that worries me most.

Some years back, I had a litter of piglets that were doing very well. They were fat, loud, and always running behind their mother. The day came to separate them, and I thought, "Let me just do it quickly and finish." So in one week, I moved them to a new pen, changed their feed, and put them together with another group.

The next morning, the pen was quiet. Too quiet. One little piglet was standing in the corner, not eating, not playing, just looking at the gate like he was waiting for his mother to come back. Many of the others did the same. Some refused to eat for two days, and a few started falling sick. I spent the next two weeks trying to fix what I had rushed.

That was when I understood that weaning is not just a change of food. For a piglet, it is the whole world changing in one day. No mother, no warm body to lie on, a new place, new smell, new taste.

Now we do it differently. Before the piglets enter the new pen, we clean it and let it dry well, because a wet floor in the first week can make them sick. We place feed and water where they can reach them easily, because a stressed piglet will not go searching for food. We keep the place calm, with no noise and no strangers walking in and out. And we never mix too many groups at once, because they already have enough to deal with.

The first week is everything. If you get it right, you spend the next weeks watching your pigs grow. If you get it wrong, you spend them nursing sick ones.

Be gentle with them in that first week. They are only babies.

Have you ever weaned piglets before? Tell us your experience in the comments.

The Afternoon the Pigs Told Me Everything

It was a very hot afternoon. By 2 o'clock, I had filled the water trough two times, and I thought the pigs were fine. They were quiet, after all.

Then I walked past the pen and stopped.

All the pigs were pushed into one corner, lying on top of each other. Their sides were moving fast. Their mouths were open and they were panting hard. Big Mama, who always runs to the fence when she sees me, did not even lift her head.

Then I understood. Pigs cannot sweat like we do. They cannot cool their bodies, so when it gets too hot, they suffer. They cannot shout for help. They just go quiet.

I took the hose and wet the mud wallow again. I put shade cloth over the side of the pen that gets the most sun. I opened the gate so air could pass through. I poured out the warm water and filled the troughs with fresh, cold water.

After 20 minutes, the pigs started to spread out. Big Mama walked into the mud and lay down with a long, happy grunt.

Now I check on my pigs at noon every day, even when they are quiet. If your pigs are panting and lying on top of each other, don't wait. They are telling you it is too hot.

Vaccination and deworming are not things you do when you remember.

Set a schedule with your vet and write it down. Ask which vaccines suit your area and keep a record for every batch. A sick pig costs far more than a vet visit.

I have noticed that many farmers treat vaccination like an emergency. They only remember it when a neighbour's pigs start dying or when they see a pig coughing in the corner. By then, it is often too late for the vaccine to help. Vaccines protect pigs before the sickness comes, not after.

Deworming works the same way. Worms don't announce themselves. A pig can look fine on the outside while worms are quietly stealing its feed from the inside. You feed the pig well, but it stays thin and grows slowly. Many farmers blame the feed when the real problem is worms. Regular deworming means the feed you pay for actually goes into the pig, not the worms.

So how do you do it properly? First, find a vet you trust and sit down with them before you even need them. Ask which diseases are common in your area, which vaccines your pigs need, and at what age each one should be given. Don't copy another farmer's schedule, because what works in one place may not suit yours. Your vet will know what is going around.

Second, write everything down. Put the dates on a calendar, on the wall of the farm office, or in a notebook you keep in the same place. Don't trust your memory when you are busy with feeding, cleaning, and selling. A written schedule does not forget.

Third, keep a record for every batch. Write the date, the vaccine or dewormer used, how many pigs got it, and who gave it. Months later, when a pig falls sick or a buyer asks questions, you will know exactly what was done. Buyers trust a farm that keeps records, and good records also help your vet advise you better.

Finally, remember the cost. A vet visit, a vaccine, and a dewormer cost a small amount of money. A sick pen costs you the medicine, the lost growth, the pigs that die, and the weeks of stress. Prevention is always the cheaper option, even if it feels like an extra expense today.

Vaccination and deworming are not exciting, but they quietly protect everything you have invested in.
