QUESTION:
Good day, Abosede. I am a new believer. I have accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and personal Savior. I had pledged to renounce the devil and his works, but I don't know why I keep going back to the same bad habits. My flesh keeps calling. I want to stop, but I can't help myself. I have fasted and prayed about it, but in the end, I keep repeating my old ways. Am I possessed? Please, I need help. What should I do to be free?
ABOSEDE: Good day, dear. Regarding your struggle with old habits, I want to reassure you that you are not alone. Many believers face similar challenges. It is not a matter of being possessed, but rather a struggle between your old nature and your new life in Christ. As a new being in Christ, I want you to know that you are in a spiritual battle. Your flesh, the world, and the devil will try to pull you back into your old patterns. But I'm happy to tell you that you have the power of the Holy Spirit to help you overcome.
However, the Holy Spirit won't just take over because you're now a Christian. You must give yourself to Him. Understand that sanctification is a process. Becoming like Christ takes time, effort, and patience. Don't be too hard on yourself.
Reflect on when, how, and why you tend to fall back into old habits. If you're aware of your triggers, develop strategies to avoid or cope with them. Beware of what you listen to and give yourself to. You can share your struggles with a trusted friend, family member, or spiritual leader for accountability and support.
They can offer guidance, encouragement, prayer support, and help set structures. You might need a change of environment, friends, or associations. Focus on your spiritual growth and development by reading and studying your Bible regularly, praying, and engaging in worship.
Acknowledge and celebrate each time you resist the temptation to fall back into old habits. This will motivate you to continue moving forward.
In conclusion, remember that freedom is a journey. Overcoming old habits and patterns takes time. Don't give up. Keep seeking God.
