Understanding the Menstrual Cycle

The menstrual cycle is a natural cyclic process that prepares the female body for pregnancy each month. Understanding how it works helps girls and women better understand their bodies and take control of their health.

Normal cycle ranges between regular 21–35 days. Once it becomes irregular, it becomes a problem.

The 4 Phases of the Cycle includes (for 28 days cycle):

1️⃣ Menstrual Phase (Days 1–5): This is when bleeding occurs ie when the body sheds the lining of the uterus.

2️⃣ Follicular Phase (Days 1–13) : The body begins to prepare for ovulation and it's controlled by some hormones that help in maturation of eggs in the ovaries.

3️⃣ Ovulation (Around Day 14): This is when egg is released from the o***y and it is the most fertile period.

4️⃣ Luteal Phase (Days 15–28): If no fertilization occurs, hormone levels drop and the cycle starts again.

Understanding your cycle will help you to feel more in control of your body and help you know when there is issue in your reproductive health.

Sir Kitoye Ajasa OBE was born on August 10, 1866. He was originally born Edmund Macaulay to sierra leone returnee who were emancipated by the British anti-slavery squadron. He was a Nigerian lawyer and legislator during the colonial period. He was conservative, and worked closely with the colonial authorities. He thought that progress would only be possible if Africans adopted European ideas and institutions. Ajasa was one of the leaders of the People's Union, the first political party in Nigeria, and was the founder of the conservative newspaper the Nigerian Pioneer. He was the first Nigerian to be knighted because of his close relationship with Sir Lord Lugard.

His ideas pitched him against Herbert Macaulay, who affiliated himself not with the British but with traditional elements and Muslims who showed concern for the indigenization of policies and responsibilities. He died in 1937. His daughter is the Oyinkan Abayomi we mentioned in our previous post.

An American hunter named Asher Watkins passed away during a safari in South Africa after being attacked by a Cape buffalo. He was 52 years old and from Texas. The incident happened in Limpopo Province while he was on a guided hunting trip.

Watkins was tracking the buffalo with the help of a professional hunter and a local tracker. During the hunt, the animal suddenly charged at him. Cape buffalo are known to be very strong and unpredictable animals. The attack happened quickly, giving little time to react. Sadly, Watkins suffered severe injuries and passed away at the scene.

People in the hunting community shared their condolences with his family. Many also spoke about how risky big-game hunting can be, even when done with experienced guides. This incident is a reminder that wild animals can be very unsafe, especially when they feel threatened.

Cape buffalo are often considered one of the most powerful animals in Africa because of their aggressive behavior. Even trained hunters can face serious harm when dealing with such animals.

This tragic event shows the importance of safety and caution during wildlife activities. It also highlights how unpredictable nature can be, no matter how prepared someone is.

José Mujica lived a life that sounds almost unbelievable. As a young man in Uruguay, he joined a group that fought against the government. In 1970, he was shot six times during a fight with police, but he survived. Later, when a military government took power, he was arrested and spent nearly 14 years in prison. He lived in very difficult conditions and was often kept alone.

When democracy returned, many people thought his life in politics was finished. But instead, he started again. He joined politics in a peaceful way, gained people’s support, and in 2009 he was elected President of Uruguay.

Even after becoming president, he chose to live a simple life. He did not move into the official presidential house. Instead, he stayed in his small farmhouse. He also drove an old Volkswagen Beetle.

Mujica gave away about 90% of his salary to help others. He believed that leaders should live like normal people and not focus on money or luxury.

His life shows that true leadership is about honesty, simplicity, and caring for others, not wealth or power.
