This morning, I got a message from one of my followers.
His name is Frank, a nail technician from Abia.
Here’s what he said
“Good morning Iking, I’m Frank, a nail technician in Abia capital.
I have ₦1,000,000 that took me 5 months to save.
I want to invest it for 2 years, but I need your guidance so I don’t lose it.”
Now pause.
Let me use Frank’s message to teach you one of the most important financial lessons the rich pay millions to learn, how to think before you invest.
First, understand that Saving Money is Hard, Losing It is Easy
Frank took 5 months to save ₦1 million.
But one wrong decision can make him lose it in 5 days.
That’s how money works, it takes time to grow, but only seconds to disappear.
If you don’t understand where your money sleeps at night, you’re not investing, you’re gambling.
Let me also remind you that Every Investment Has a Character
I know you may be wondering....
Which one be Character for investment again?
Oya.
Cam down, let me explain this in a way that even a Grandma in the village will understand.
Now imagine:
Mama Ngozi sells garri in the market.
Every day, she saves ₦2,000 from her profit inside a small plastic container.
After 5 months, she opens it, boom! ₦300,000.
She’s excited.
Her neighbor tells her:
“Mama Ngozi, give me the money, let me double it for you in palm oil business. In two weeks, I’ll return ₦600,000.”
Sounds sweet, right?
Two weeks later, she can’t find the neighbor again.
Money gone.
There are only 3 Places You Can Keep Money
1: To Protect It - Savings Account, MMF (Money Market Fund), Treasury Bills, FGN Bonds.
These are safe. They won’t make you rich overnight, but your money will sleep well.
2: To Grow It - Real Estate, Agriculture, Business Expansion.
These carry moderate risk and need time and patience.
3: To Gamble It - Ponzi Schemes, “Double Your Money” Offers, Random Crypto Projects.
Here, you either make it fast or lose it faster.
Let me tell you the truth: Investment is Not About What You Invest In, It’s About Who You Become
Frank is a nail technician.
He already has a skill that generates money.
That means the best place to start investing is in himself, upgrade, learn advanced nail design, open a small nail studio, build a brand.
If he grows that ₦1 million into ₦10 million through skill expansion, it’s still investment, just not the one society talks about.
Here's my advice to Frank:
If you want to invest for 2 years, here’s a simple mentorship path:
₦500,000 - put it in Money Market Mutual Fund (MMF).
You can access it anytime (within 24–48 hours).
It can pay up to 18–20% yearly when the market is good.
It’s safe and regulated by the SEC.
₦300,000 - buy FGN Bonds (2–3 years tenor).
It pays you every 3–6 months as interest.
It’s backed by the Federal Government (zero default risk).
You can even use it later as collateral to borrow money from your bank for business expansion.
₦200,000 - invest in yourself.
Learn a skill that will multiply your income.
Buy better tools, improve your marketing, learn social media ads for your nail business.
That’s how wealth is built, protect some, grow some, and invest some in yourself.
Never Invest Because of Fear or Pressure
If someone is rushing you, say this:
“My money is not running away. I’ll decide when I understand what I’m doing.”
Because Money doesn’t reward speed. It rewards understanding.
if you are still reading this, I want you to understand that financial wisdom is not about how much you earn,
it’s about how well you manage what you already have.
Whether you’re a nail technician, a tailor, a barber, or a teacher
don’t rush to “invest.”
Learn first. Understand the game. Then play to win.
Because in the financial world,
the poor take advice from emotions,
the rich take advice from information.
