๐Ÿ“– TOPIC: HYPOPHOSPHATASIA (HPP)

Have you heard of Hypophosphatasia (HPP)? ๐Ÿค”

Hypophosphatasia is a rare inherited metabolic disorder that affects the mineralisation of bones and teeth due to reduced activity of the tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase enzyme.

๐Ÿงฌ KEY FACTS YOU SHOULD KNOW:

๐Ÿ”น Cause: Pathogenic variants in the ALPL gene.
๐Ÿ”น Key laboratory clue: Persistently low serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP).
๐Ÿ”น Signs and symptoms: Premature tooth loss, bone pain, recurrent fractures, muscle weakness and impaired mobility.
๐Ÿ”น Diagnosis: Clinical assessment, laboratory investigations, imaging and genetic testing when indicated.
๐Ÿ”น Treatment: May include asfotase alfa for eligible patients, pain management, dental care and multidisciplinary support.

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธ NURSING MANAGEMENT
โœ… Assess pain and mobility.
โœ… Prevent falls and avoidable injuries.
โœ… Monitor relevant laboratory results and complications.
โœ… Promote oral health and adequate nutrition.
โœ… Educate patients and families about follow-up and warning signs.

โš ๏ธ IMPORTANT CLINICAL NOTE: Persistently low ALP can suggest HPP but does not confirm the diagnosis. Specialist assessment is essential. Bisphosphonates generally should be avoided in HPP unless a specialist determines otherwise.

๐Ÿ’ก NURSING STUDENTS, REMEMBER:
๐Ÿฆท Early tooth loss
๐Ÿฆด Bone fragility
๐Ÿงช Low ALP
๐Ÿงฌ ALPL gene

๐Ÿฆด๐ŸŒ WORLD HYPOPHOSPHATASIA DAY
๐Ÿ“… 30TH OCTOBER 2026

๐Ÿ’™ RARE DISEASE. REAL PEOPLE. GREATER AWARENESS.

Today, we raise awareness of Hypophosphatasia (HPP), a rare genetic condition affecting the development and strength of bones and teeth.

๐Ÿฆท KNOW THE SIGNS
๐Ÿ”น Early loss of teeth.
๐Ÿ”น Bone and joint pain.
๐Ÿ”น Recurrent fractures.
๐Ÿ”น Muscle weakness and fatigue.

๐Ÿฉบ NURSING AWARENESS
Recognising unexplained bone problems, unusual dental history and persistently low alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels may help healthcare professionals identify patients who need further assessment.

โค๏ธ OUR MESSAGE: Every rare disease deserves recognition. Every patient deserves compassionate care, timely diagnosis and support.
