Every farmer knows or has experienced their cattle being affected by diseases. Today let's see some of the diseases that affect cattle.
Cattle are susceptible to various diseases, which can be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, or nutritional deficiencies.
1. Bacterial Diseases
✅. Anthrax:
Caused by Bacillus anthracis, it can lead to sudden death in cattle.
✅. Brucellosis:
Caused by Brucella species, leading to abortions and infertility.
✅. Mastitis:
Infection of the udder, often caused by Staphylococcus or Streptococcus.
✅. Tuberculosis:
Caused by Mycobacterium bovis, a zoonotic disease that affects the lungs and lymph nodes.
✅. Blackleg:
Caused by Clostridium chauvoei, it leads to swelling and lameness.
2. Viral Diseases
✅. Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD):
Highly contagious disease causing blisters in the mouth and hooves.
✅. Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD):
Leads to diarrhea, reproductive issues, and immunosuppression.
✅. Rinderpest:
Eradicated but historically caused severe fever, diarrhea, and death.
✅. Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR):
A respiratory disease caused by bovine herpesvirus.
✅. Bluetongue:
Transmitted by biting midges, causing fever and swelling in the head and mouth.
3. Parasitic Diseases
✅. Helminthiasis:
Caused by gastrointestinal worms, leading to weight loss and poor growth.
✅. Liver Fluke Disease (Fascioliasis):
Caused by Fasciola hepatica, leading to liver damage.
✅. Ticks and Tick-Borne Diseases:
Includes anaplasmosis, babesiosis, and theileriosis.
✅. Coccidiosis:
Caused by Eimeria species, leading to diarrhea and dehydration.
4. Fungal Diseases
✅. Ringworm:
A skin infection caused by dermatophytes.
✅. Mycotoxicosis:
Results from consuming mold-contaminated feed.
5. Nutritional and Metabolic Disorders
✅. Milk Fever (Hypocalcemia):
Caused by low blood calcium levels around calving.
✅. Ketosis:
Due to energy deficiency, often during lactation.
✅. Bloat:
Gas accumulation in the rumen, often from high-grain or legume diets.
✅. Grass Tetany:
Caused by low magnesium levels.
6. Miscellaneous Conditions
i). Lumpy Skin Disease:
Caused by a capripoxvirus, leading to nodules on the skin.
ii). Johne’s Disease: Chronic wasting disease caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis.
iii). Pinkeye (Infectious Bovine Keratoconjunctivitis):
An eye infection caused by Moraxella bovis.

Hygiene and biosecurity measures
Early diagnosis and treatment are essential to minimize losses and maintain the health of cattle.
