Sunscreen is basically your cheapest anti-aging and skin cancer prevention tool.
1. *Blocks skin cancer*
UV radiation damages DNA in skin cells. That’s the #1 cause of melanoma, basal cell, and squamous cell carcinoma. Using SPF 30+ daily cuts your risk of melanoma by ∼50% and squamous cell carcinoma by ∼40%.
2. *Prevents premature aging*
UVA rays pe*****te deep and break down collagen + elastin. That’s what causes wrinkles, sagging, and sun spots. “Photoaging” from sun exposure accounts for ∼80-90% of visible facial aging. Sunscreen slows that down dramatically.
3. *Stops hyperpigmentation and uneven tone*
If you have dark spots, melasma, acne marks, or use actives like vitamin A, kojic acid, or the carrot lotion we talked about earlier — UV makes them darker and harder to fade. Sunscreen is non-negotiable if you’re treating pigmentation.
4. *Protects your skin barrier*
Sun damage weakens your skin’s ability to hold moisture and defend against irritants. You end up with dryness, sensitivity, and more breakouts.
5. *Works even on cloudy days and indoors*
Up to 80% of UV rays pass through clouds. UVA also comes through windows. So if you sit by a window or drive a lot, you’re still getting exposure.
What to use
- *SPF 30+* for daily use, *SPF 50+* if you’re outdoors or using skin-lightening actives
- *Broad spectrum*: Covers both UVA and UVB
- *Reapply every 2 hours* when outside. 1/4 teaspoon for face alone
Common myth
“Dark skin doesn’t need sunscreen.” False. Melanin gives ~SPF 13 protection naturally, but you can still get sun damage, hyperpigmentation, and skin cancer. It just shows up differently.
