This issue is common with new tarpaulin ponds. Here's a detailed answer you can give the person (Michael Ratty) or share as your expert advice:

---

CAUSE:
The foam and bubbles on the water surface are due to chemical residue from the new tarpaulin. Manufacturers often treat tarpaulins with chemicals or factory coatings to preserve the material. When water is added, especially for the first time, these residues react and cause foaming or a slippery film on the surface.

---

RISKS TO FISH:
Yes, introducing juveniles or fingerlings immediately into this water can be dangerous. The chemical residue can affect their skin, gills, and stress level, leading to sickness or even death.

---

WHAT TO DO BEFORE STOCKING FISH:

1. Wash the Tarpaulin Thoroughly:
Use clean water and soft sponge or brush to scrub the inside of the pond several times. You can use salt water or lemon water to help neutralize chemicals.

2. Sun-dry the Tarpaulin (if possible):
After washing, leave the tarpaulin pond under the sun for 2–3 days. Sunlight helps to remove chemical smells and residues.

3. Refill with Fresh Water:
After sun-drying, refill with fresh water and allow it to sit for 3–5 days before stocking. This allows any leftover residue to settle or dissolve safely.

4. Perform a Water Test (optional but recommended):
If you can, test the pH and ammonia level to ensure it’s safe.

---

Advice:
Never rush to stock fish in new ponds. Water conditioning is key to fish survival.

During the rainy season, catfish farmers need to take special precautions to protect their ponds and fish. Here’s what to avoid and watch out for:

What to Avoid During the Rainy Season in Catfish Farming:

1. Avoid Overflowing Ponds

Heavy rainfall can cause ponds to overflow, leading to fish escaping.

Solution: Build a proper drainage system and raise the pond walls slightly.

2. Avoid Poor Water Quality

Rainwater can dilute pond water, affect pH balance, and wash in harmful materials like soil, pesticides, or waste.

Solution: Monitor water parameters (pH, ammonia, DO) regularly and do water changes if needed.

3. Avoid Overfeeding

Fish may eat less during cold, rainy days. Overfeeding leads to waste build-up and oxygen depletion.

Solution: Observe fish behavior and reduce feed as needed.

4. Avoid Leaving Ponds Uncovered

Rain can cause water temperature drops and increase stress in fish.

Solution: Use shade nets or tarpaulin covers to reduce the direct impact of rain.

5. Avoid Ignoring Health Signs

Rainy season can weaken fish immunity, increasing the risk of infections.

Solution: Maintain good hygiene, reduce stress, and watch for early signs of disease.

6. Avoid Allowing Flood Water Into Your Pond

Floodwater may introduce predators, pathogens, or wild fish.

Solution: Secure the pond surroundings with netting or barriers.

Professional Water pH Correction Service

Presented by Bluewater Catfish farm

Introduction

At Bluewater Catfish Farm, we specialize in fish farm management and water quality solutions. A pond with a pH of 3.5 is highly acidic, which can cause stress, slow growth, and even fish mortality. To ensure a stable and healthy environment for your fish, we provide a professional pH correction service.

Problems Caused by Low pH (Below 6.0)

❌ Fish stress, disease, and mortality
❌ Poor feed conversion and slow growth
❌ Reduced oxygen availability in water
❌ Difficulty in breeding and hatching
❌ High levels of harmful metals (e.g., aluminum toxicity)

Proposed Solutions to Increase pH (Target: 6.5 – 7.5)

1. Agricultural Lime (Calcium Carbonate - CaCO₃)

βœ” Purpose: Neutralizes acidity and stabilizes pH.
βœ” Application:

Apply 100–200 kg per hectare of pond surface area.

Dissolve in water and spread evenly across the pond over 2–3 days.

2. Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate - NaHCO₃)

βœ” Purpose: Quickly raises pH but must be applied gradually.
βœ” Application:

Add 1 teaspoon per 40 liters (or 1 kg per 10,000 liters).

Dissolve in a bucket of pond water and distribute evenly.

Monitor pH and apply in stages over 24–48 hours.

3. Dolomite Lime (Calcium Magnesium Carbonate)

βœ” Purpose: Helps balance pH while adding essential minerals.
βœ” Application:

Use 100–300 kg per hectare, depending on acidity levels.

Sprinkle directly into the pond or dissolve before application.

4. Crushed Oyster Shells / Limestone Rocks

βœ” Purpose: Provides a natural, long-term pH buffer.
βœ” Application:

Place a mesh bag filled with crushed oyster shells or limestone in the pond.

Let it dissolve slowly over several weeks.

5. Increase Aeration

βœ” Purpose: Helps remove excess COβ‚‚, which contributes to acidity.
βœ” Application:

Install aerators or fountains to improve oxygen levels.

We ensure a gradual pH adjustment to prevent shocking the fish, with daily monitoring until stability is achieved.
