WHOSE ARE YOU?
1Corinthians 6:19
What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? (KJV)
In the opening chapters of the Book of Acts, we encounter a powerful picture of the early Church. In Acts of the Apostles 1:14, the believers
“continued with one accord in prayer and supplication.”
By Acts 2:1, they were
“all with one accord in one place.”
When the Holy Spirit came upon them (Acts 2:4), they were filled and began to speak as the Spirit gave them utterance. The result of this divine encounter was not confusion, rivalry, or division but unity, love, power, and growth. Acts 2:42–47 shows a Church steadfast in doctrine and fellowship, breaking bread together, praying together, sharing possessions, and praising God.
They were of one heart and one soul (Acts 4:32). Great grace was upon them all (Acts 4:33). The Lord added to the Church daily such as should be saved.
This unity was not accidental. It was the evidence that they knew whose they were. So the question confronts every believer today: Whose are you? According to 1 Corinthians 1:9–10, we are called into the fellowship of God’s Son, Jesus Christ.
We are urged to speak the same thing, to have no divisions among us, and to be perfectly joined together in the same mind and judgment. The Church is not a social club. It is “the house of God… the pillar and ground of the truth” (1Timothy 3:15).
To belong to Christ is to belong to His body. And to belong to His body is to embrace its culture; unity, love, humility, discipline, and spiritual mindedness. Any believer who resists the lifestyle laid down by Christ and the apostles works against the very growth of the body. Church growth, both spiritual and numerical, is built on unity born of love.
From our opening text, the heart of the message is clear in 1 Corinthians 6:19–20:
“Ye are not your own… For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.”
To ask, “Whose are you?” is to ask: Who owns your life? Who directs your choices? Who defines your identity? If you are joined to the Lord, you are one spirit with Him (1 Cor. 6:17). You are Christ’s servant, whether free or bound (1 Cor. 7:22–23). You are called to abide with God in the place where He has positioned you.
We cannot bargain with God’s instruction and our opinions do not count when it comes to what God wants His children to do. Believers who understand ownership walk differently. They live not to please themselves but to please the One who has chosen them. The scripture further admonishes us in Romans 8:6–8 that to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. The carnal mind is enmity against God.
Similarly, Galatians 5:16–17 teaches us to walk in the Spirit so that we do not fulfill the lust of the flesh. The works of the flesh; envy, strife, immorality, drunkenness, and the like destroy unity and defile the body of Christ. If we belong to Christ, we must reflect Christ. The Church’s culture must not be shaped by jealousy, pride, or selfish ambition, but by love and holiness.
CONFESSION: I am bought with a price; I therefore glorify God in my body and only him.
