CQ Journal A quiet space from Sarawak, reading public issues through CQ. Not reaction, but clarity. Not persuasion, but understanding. https://cqjournal.substack.com/

We name patterns, hold nuance, and build coherence in conversation. CQ Journal is written by a Sarawakian thinker and cultural observer exploring how cultural intelligence shapes identity, leadership, and social cohesion. Drawing from lived experience in Sarawak and across Malaysia, this page applies a CQ lens to contemporary issues not to persuade or provoke, but to clarify, slow down narratives, and widen understanding. Much of what CQ describes are practices Sarawakians already live by navigating difference through restraint, context, and relational awareness. There is a quiet wisdom in this that deserves to be named and preserved, especially in an increasingly reactive world.

(To journey, to encounter, to learn.) Peace is not demanded. It is practised.

We have become very good at demanding accountability from young people while becoming increasingly uncomfortable examining how we adults model accountability in public ourselves. Something to seriously think about.

Word for word.

If outrage is so compelling to a person, doesn’t it also become an incentive? Much of what is said in reflective conversations critiques the attention economy that rewards outrage yet that same economy helped create the platform and paycheque from which MANY now reflect on. Perhaps the question isn’t whether there is deliberately provocation of outrage (there is), but whether being β€œinvested” in it helps keep its machinery running.

Did Gen Z β€œkill” the art of waiting or have they been conditioned not to wait? How could they appreciate waiting when nearly every system they inherited was designed to eliminate it? Instant messages, live locations, real-time updates and on-demand everything have made uncertainty feel like a malfunction. Perhaps the question is not why young people cannot wait, but what constant immediacy has trained all of us to become?

We did not merely remove waiting from everyday life. We removed one of the spaces in which reflection used to happen. "Gen Z" did not invent that world. Adults and technology companies built it, commercialised it, handed it to them and now risk blaming them for being formed by it.
