🐔 Why Vaccinating Your Flock Matters (Yes, Even for Backyard Chickens!)

Hey flock fam! 👋
I know vaccination can feel like “just another expense,” but hear me out — it’s one of the best ways to protect your birds from devastating, fast-spreading diseases.

🚨 Common preventable diseases in chickens:

· Marek’s disease (paralysis/tumors)
· Newcastle disease (respiratory + nervous issues)
· Infectious bronchitis
· Fowl pox

💉 Why vaccinate?

· Saves lives — some viruses have no cure
· Prevents outbreaks that can wipe out a coop in days
· Reduces suffering in your flock
· Protects neighboring birds (good neighbor policy!)

🐣 What you can do:

· Ask your hatchery if chicks are already vaccinated for Marek’s
· Talk to a poultry vet about which vaccines make sense for your area
· Follow proper handling — vaccines are fragile!

Let’s be real for a minute… 🐔💔

Sometimes chicken rearing is all sunny eggs and fluffy chicks. And other times… it’s just hard.

Between predator scares, mysterious limps, unexpected sickness, and the heartbreak of losing one despite your best efforts – it can really take a toll. Add in the cost of feed going up, dealing with pecking order drama, or cleaning the coop in freezing rain… yeah. It’s not always the peaceful homestead dream.

But we keep going because they depend on us. 💪

Getting ready to set eggs? Here’s what to check BEFORE they go in the incubator 🥚🔍

Don’t waste 21 days on eggs that never had a chance. Before you set them, look for these 5 things:

1️⃣ Cracks & Shell Integrity
Even hairline cracks let bacteria in. Toss cracked, thin, or badly misshapen eggs.

2️⃣ Bloom (Cuticle)
Unwashed eggs with the bloom intact are best. Never wash hatching eggs—it removes their natural protection.

3️⃣ Shape & Size
Avoid round, oblong, or giant eggs. Medium to large, normally shaped eggs hatch best. Extra-large often have low hatch rates.

4️⃣ Air Cell Position
Candle first! Air cell should be at the blunt end. If it’s loose, off-center, or at the pointy end, development will likely fail.

5️⃣ Age & Storage
Set within 7–10 days of lay for best results. Store at 55–60°F (12–15°C), pointed end down, turned once daily. Eggs older than 14 days = poor hatch.

Bonus: No poop-covered eggs if possible—they introduce bacteria. Light dirt can be carefully scraped off, but don’t wash or soak.
