🤝 Strengthening Partnerships for a More Competitive Fresh Produce Sector

Yesterday, we were honoured to host a delegation from the Import Promotion Desk for a productive engagement focused on strengthening our ongoing partnership and exploring new opportunities for collaboration.

The discussions provided an opportunity to review the progress made through our joint initiatives, including the development and growth of the FPC Kenya Training Academy, which continues to play a vital role in building the capacity of fresh produce industry stakeholders through practical, market-driven training programmes.

We also exchanged ideas on areas of mutual interest and explored opportunities for deeper collaboration aimed at enhancing market access, improving compliance with international standards, strengthening value chains, and increasing the competitiveness of Kenyan fresh produce in global markets.

At FPC Kenya, we recognize that strategic partnerships are essential in driving innovation, knowledge transfer, and sustainable growth within the horticulture sector. We remain committed to working closely with partners such as the Import Promotion Desk to create lasting value for our members and contribute to the continued growth of Kenya’s fresh produce industry.

We thank the Import Promotion Desk delegation for their visit and look forward to building on the strong foundation of our partnership as we work together to unlock new opportunities for Kenyan exporters.

Sustainability in fresh produce is no longer just a conversation it is becoming the standard for doing business globally. 🌱🇰🇪

Today’s consumers want to know where their food comes from, how it is grown, and whether the people and environment behind its production are protected. For Kenya’s fresh produce industry, this means that responsible farming practices are now directly linked to market access, competitiveness and consumer trust.

From proper pesticide management and water conservation to worker welfare and food safety compliance, sustainability touches every part of the value chain. It is not only about meeting export requirements it is about protecting the future of our industry and ensuring Kenyan produce continues to stand out in international markets for the right reasons.

Kenya’s horticulture sector supports millions of livelihoods and remains one of the country’s strongest export industries. As global standards continue to evolve, producers and exporters who invest in sustainable practices are better positioned to access premium markets, reduce risks and build long-term resilience.

At Fresh Produce Consortium of Kenya, we remain committed to promoting responsible production practices that support growers, exporters and the entire fresh produce ecosystem while safeguarding people, the environment and the future of our industry.

A sustainable industry is a stronger industry. Together, let’s continue growing safe, quality and trusted Kenyan produce for the world. 🌍🤝

🌸🌱 Advancing Sustainability and Competitiveness in the Flower Industry 🌱🌸

Today’s discussions at IFTEX 2026 brought together key stakeholders in the floriculture sector to reflect on the future of sustainable flower farming and the practical steps needed to strengthen the industry’s long-term growth and competitiveness.

Key conversations focused on the importance of adopting sustainable approaches in pesticide management to protect worker health, preserve the environment, and meet evolving international market requirements. Participants emphasized the need for responsible farming practices, continuous capacity building, and innovative solutions that support sustainable production.

The role of Fair Trade within the flower industry was also widely discussed. While panelists acknowledged the positive contribution Fair Trade has made in promoting ethical production, worker welfare, and market access, they also challenged Fair Trade organizations to become more responsive to the realities faced by producers and flower farmers.

Among the recommendations raised were the need for Fair Trade bodies to review certification and compliance costs to make them more reasonable and accessible, engage more closely with producers to better understand the challenges within the production chain, and develop tailored, practical, and pocket-friendly solutions that support farmers sustainably. Panelists further stressed the importance of walking the production journey together with flower farmers in order to gain deeper insight into the operational, financial, and market challenges producers face on a daily basis.

The discussions also highlighted the critical importance of collaboration across the industry value chain. Stakeholders noted that stronger partnerships between growers, exporters, certification bodies, industry associations, and development partners are essential in driving innovation, improving sustainability, and ensuring the continued competitiveness of Kenya’s floriculture sector in the global market.

As sustainability increasingly shapes global trade, the sector remains committed to finding balanced solutions that support environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and commercial viability for flower producers.
