*BROODING/BROODER CONSTRUCTION*

What is a Brooder?
✅a brooder is a simple construction that is used to raise chicks until a point they are not so vulnerable.
✅Brooders maybe small rooms, wood construction, brooder boxes etc.
✅Chicks should stay in a brooder for at least 3 weeks - 4 weeks, but this varies with the ecological condition of a place and breed of Chicken.

*How to make a good brooder!*
✅ Make sure the brooder is not cold. ( provide source of heat ie. 100,watts Bulb, hot water bottles, brooder pots, etc)
✅Consider constructing brooders that's not too big and not too small.
✅Clean and disinfect the brooder before receiving chicks
✅Provide enough drinkers and enough feeders
✅Make sure the brooder is free from insects, rodents and mature chicken.
✅Provide dry dusting materials (saw dust or rice husks).

*HOW TO CONSTRUCT A BROODER*

1.Divide your 8 by 4 feets plywood or hardboard into two parts.I.e cut 2 feets width horizontally parts.Join them and make a round or circular shape
✅The main purpose why a brooder must be circular in shape is to avoid chicks huddling together in a corner which make chicks to crush or sleep on others thus causing death.

2.Onflat floor of brooder place dry woodshavings to absorbs wetness from droppings and to keep the brooder warm.
✅Avoid using fine saw dust as they will be consumed hence causing death as chicken are monogastric hence they cant digest wood.

3.To keep chicks warm,a heat source is required, hang a 250watts infrared bulb or 75- 100 watts bulb at middle of brooder or a brooder jiko
✅If the chicks crowdal around the bulb or brooder jiko the brooder is not warm if they hide away from bulb or brooder jiko it means the brooder is too hot.
✅Always make sure chicks are scattered inside a brooder, you can use a thermometer to monitor temperature.
✅So maintain atleast 37 degree temperature and reduce as the chicks grow.
✅One brooder jiko can serve 300 chicks.

✍🏻NB.Note it is a Brooder jiko not a normal jiko.
✅Normal jiko produce carbon monoxide which may lead to chicks suffocation.
✅If u can't afford the bulb or brooder jiko use warm water in a 4 litres kibuyu.

✍🏿Every poultry farmer should know that vaccines protect your flock just like they protect humans.

✍🏿They prepare chickens’ bodies to fight against deadly diseases.

👉 Poultry vaccines come in three main forms:

*1.)Live (modified/attenuated)*
👉🏿contain weakened disease germs.e.g Newcastle with IB, Newcastle Lasota,Gumboro vaccine etc.
👉🏿These ones need constant boosting/repeat since they are short-lived.Given in drinking water, eyedrop or nose drop.

*2.)Killed (inactivated)*
👉🏿 contain dead germs.
E.g Fowl pox vaccine,fowl typhoid vaccine, Infectious Coryza vaccine,Marek's vaccine,NCD + IB + EDS vaccine etc.Mostly administered through injection.They are long-lived and requires less boosting.

*3.)Recombinant*-modern type made using advanced technology.This one is injected from day one at the hatchery e.g the Vectormune ND® which protects against Newcastle disease and Marek's.

✅Why do layers need more vaccines than broilers?
👉🏿Layers stay in production for about 18 months so they need more vaccination than broilers.
👉🏿Broilers are slaughtered early (5–6 weeks), so they don’t need as many.

✅ Important things to note when vaccinating:

1.) Always transport vaccines in a cool box with ice packs to keep them effective.

2.) Give vitamins a day before vaccination and a day after vaccination not on the Vaccination day especially if it's an oral vaccine– this reduces stress in birds.

3.) Never mix vaccines with vitamins.

4.) Don’t vaccinate sick birds.

5.) If birds are on antibiotics, stop 2 days before vaccination and continue 2 days after.

6.)Prepare the vaccine and use it quickly – don’t expose it for long.

7.) For vaccines given in drinking water:

*Birds should finish the water in not more than 2 hours.

*Discard leftover vaccine mixture after 2 hours,wash drinkers, and then provide fresh water with vitamins afterwards.

👉🏿Remember that proper vaccination will lead to a healthier flock which leads to higher profits.
👉🏿Take it seriously, and your birds will thank you with strong growth and productivity.
