Dates: Relieve cough and soothe bronchial passages.
The Arabs consider dates palm to be "the source of life". It does not only provide travelers with nutritious fruit but also serves as a beverage when the tree trunk is tapped.
Dates are one of the most energy rich fruits in the world. Dates provide the adult male who is involved in physical activity with about 11% of the daily energy needs.
Including dates in ones diet provides;
β 66% sugars comprising primarily of glucose and fructose.
β B group vitamins, particularly B1, B2, niacin and B6. These vitamins facilitate the utilization of sugars by the body cells.
β Minerals. Dates is one of the most mineral rich fruits and it's specifically high in potassium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus and calcium.
β Vegetable fiber. For every 100g of dates, about one third of the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of vegetable fiber is obtained. The most predominant soluble fibers in dates being pectin and gum.
In the therapeutic applications of dates,
β It is traditionally used to relieve dry cough. Dates have a proven soothing effect on the bronchial passages. To ensure this is effective, boil the dates in milk.
β Low protein diets.
Dates are very deficient in protein. They become useful when protein intake limits are needed for instance in the case of renal failure.
β High energy diets.
Dates are vital in cases of fatigue and weakness. They are essential to adolescents, athletes, pregnant and lactating women because of their sugar, vitamins and minerals.
