CLICOM Short: Did the dam start the sea eating Keta?
Did the Akosombo Dam start the sea eating Keta?
Almost everyone in Ghana has heard the same explanation: build the dam on the Volta in the 1960s, trap the river's sand, and the sea begins to eat the coast. Yet when you line up maps, satellite images and shoreline surveys from 1913 to 2015 across roughly 90 kilometres of eastern coast, the shoreline at Keta was already retreating decades before the Volta dams were built.
Dams, ports and sea walls still matter. What the century-long record changes is the question: not which single project started everything, but how human works stepped into a coast that was already moving.
