In a move highlighting the strategic importance of stability in the "Heart of Africa," former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has arrived in Addis Ababa to lead the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) for Ethiopia’s upcoming General Elections.
Declaring that "Ethiopia’s success is Africa’s success," Kenyatta emphasized that because Ethiopia serves as the headquarters for the African Union, the integrity of its democratic process resonates across the entire continent.
"The election here is important not just for Ethiopia, but for the entire continent," Kenyatta told members of the press upon his arrival. "Our desire is to see Ethiopia continue to grow from strength to strength, serving as a model for our continent," he stressed.
Kenyatta is heading a diverse and high-level team of 73 AU Short-Term Observers (STOs) representing 37 African nations. In a significant nod to gender inclusivity, the mission boasts a 61% female composition, including election experts; human rights specialists, and civil society leaders.
Reflecting on the AU's role in deepening democracy, Kenyatta highlighted the importance of the African Peer Review Mechanism. He noted that African nations must develop their own "best practices" rather than relying on external templates.
"Our situations are unique," Kenyatta stated. "We do not necessarily have to copy and paste models from other parts of the world. We can create and learn from ourselves and replicate best practices across the continent."
As the country prepares to head to the polls on Monday, June 1, 2026, the former President issued a heartfelt call for a peaceful environment, urging citizens to "wisely make their choice."
"I am very hopeful that it will be peaceful and that people will have the opportunity to express their democratic wish," he said.
