Have you spotted some unusual bumpy textures on your farm-fresh eggs recently? 🥚
Don’t worry — they’re completely safe and won’t affect the taste or quality of your eggs at all.
You’re more likely to notice this during the winter months because we give the girls a little extra calcium. Around this time of year, hens go through their annual moult, gradually shedding old feathers to grow new ones (they do look a bit scruffy for a while — bless them!). Feather regrowth requires a lot of calcium, so we add a supplement to their water to support them.
For hens that aren’t moulting, that extra calcium still has to go somewhere — and the easiest place for it to show up is on the egg shell, causing those little bumps.
Perfectly natural, perfectly safe, and just another sign of well-loved hens 💛🐔
