Last week, the SWFPO and the NFFO co-hosted a fishing hustings event in Brixham. The gathering aimed to discuss critical issues affecting the fishing industry, on land and at sea, in the South West ahead of the upcoming general election this week. Although invitations were extended to candidates from all key coastal constituencies in Devon and South East Cornwall, only Anthony Mangnall attended. Despite the panel’s disappointing turnout, the audience—comprising fishermen, vessel owners, market operators, and local industry representatives—had the opportunity to hear Anthony’s plans for supporting the industry he has grown to love over the past 4.5 years. Discussions centered on recognising fishing as a low-carbon, sustainable food source and prioritising it for these reasons in marine planning. Anthony also addressed topics such as the need to balance conservation and economic interest in fishing; supporting greater investment in research, fisheries management initiatives, technological advancements; addressing misinformation around the industry and career opportunities; and reducing regulatory burdens on the seafood industry as a result of Brexit associated with increased paperwork requirements, trade barriers and labour shortages exacerbated by stricter immigration rules. While not the lively debate expected, the evening provided valuable insights for ensuring a prosperous future for our industry. We extend our gratitude to Anthony for attending the event and demonstrating his support for the SW fishing industry.
