The only consistent and risk-taking elder I know in Gambella is Elder Gatluak Yang Thoan. I observed him in many political and security meetings when I was working in different government hierarchies. He used to express his thoughts bravely when the situation required, even if it was hard for the king to swallow it. That's the reason why he was arrested several times!

The elders are not valuable in society because they live longer, they are valuable because they take risks to speak on behalf of the victimised or marginalised ones, they are valuable because they use their experiences to guide the community and tell histories 📜.
Therefore, the elder who keeps silent in the middle of the problems where ladies and children are being killed because of their identity in daylight, that elder does not deserve honour. The elder who fears taking risks for his people is not for people, but for his self benefits.
