Gaza faces the severe risk of famine as food consumption and nutrition indicators have reached their worst levels since the conflict began.

As of July 2025, over 320,000 children, the entire population under five in the Gaza Strip, are at risk of acute malnutrition, with thousands suffering from severe acute malnutrition, the deadliest form of undernutrition.

Despite a partial reopening of crossings, humanitarian aid entering Gaza is barely a trickle of what a population of over two million people needs every month.

“Emaciated children and babies are dying from malnutrition in Gaza,” said UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell. “We need immediate, safe and unhindered humanitarian access across Gaza to scale up the delivery of life-saving food, nutrition, water and medicine. Without that, mothers and fathers will continue to face a parent’s worst nightmare, powerless to save a starving child from a condition we are able to prevent.”

A new food security analysis confirms 2 out of the 3 official famine thresholds have been breached in parts of .

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) is the global standard for measuring food insecurity. It is a jointly agreed, evidence-based system used in over 30 countries. Even in war zones, data continues to flow through field teams, mobile surveys and satellite imagery.

The IPC ranks situations from:
1️ - None/Minimal
2️ - Stressed
3️ - Crisis
4️ - Emergency
5️ - Famine – when people are starving and death is imminent.

📉 Today, nearly 500,000 people in Gaza, nearly a quarter of the population, are in IPC Phase 5. The rest face emergency levels of hunger (Phase 4).
🔺 39% are going days without food.
🔺 Child malnutrition has quadrupled in just two months.
🔺 Children are dying from hunger and lack of access to care.

This is not a future risk—it is a present catastrophe. Time is running out to mount a full-scale humanitarian response.

We reiterate our demand for:

🔹 Unrestricted access to humanitarian assistance—at scale—for all Gazans, including women and girls

🔹 The immediate release of all hostages

🔹 An immediate ceasefire that paves the way for sustainable peace

We echo the hopes that this week’s High-level International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine is a turning point—leading to a viable two-state solution, with Israel and Palestine living side by side in peace and security.
