Mother Nature sure threw us for a loop this year. Extreme cold, and abundance of snow, tricked us with warm weather, then back to cold. Tomorrow, is the first day of Spring. Beekeepers are regrouping and ordering their bee stock to make sure there are enough bees to pollinate crops, and to be able to provide you all with the beneficial products that come from the hive.

Most people think HONEY or candles. Did you know that there is so much more a bee hive can provide?

-Bee pollen in small amounts can be consumed for desensitizing seasonal allergies.

-Sore throat? Propolis tincture

-Beeswax has so many uses from candles and lipbalm to furniture polish.

-Royal Jelly is added to skin creams

-Bee sting therapy can treat illnesses.

-The sound the hive makes is also soothing and rumor has it, Beekeepers live longer because of this resonating buzz.

Have a bee-utiful day everyone.

Honey harvest season is in full swing!

Pollen collection happens throughout the season, it needs to be frozen for at least a week to kill off any wax moth eggs. Then it gets dehydrated to cure it. It then goes back into the freezer for the same reason. It then goes through a cleaning machine, then back in the freezer. I prepackaged some for incoming orders. Honey collection happens when frames are decapped and are put in an extractor. The honey is spun out, debris is filtered, and stored in manageable pails until we need it. Honey comb cutting needs to be cut into pieces that are 5cm×9cm, put in containers and frozen to stop crystallization or hatching of wax moths. The leftover wax cappings get melted and filtered for beeswax. This is the worst and messiest job of beekeeping. You wouldn't believe the honey and propolis sludge that needs to removed. Just some of the behind the scenes work that goes on during harvest! OK, back to work, cutting comb, drying the next batch of pollen and filtering the last of the beeswax cappings from the summer honey.

Bees hide a surprising secret.
When the hive loses its queen, who alone is able to give life to the colony and maintain order in a perfectly organized society, all seems lost. The life of the hive slows down. Without new eggs, the future is lost. In a few weeks, the colony may be doomed.
But the bees do not panic. Nor do they expect salvation from outside.
Demonstrating extraordinary collective intelligence and profound instincts, they trigger spectacular emergency procedures, almost unimaginable in a world dominated by insects.

◆ The transformation begins with a simple but essential choice
The worker bees choose common larvae - those who would normally be mere workers. They are nothing special. They are not born different. But their fate changes completely.
They are chosen to receive a special food: royal jelly. A rare substance, produced by healthy bees, rich in proteins, vitamins and bioactive compounds. This is royal food in the purest sense of the word.

The larvae fed exclusively with this substance no longer follow the normal path. Within a few days, their bodies develop differently. The ovaries become active. The body grows larger, stronger. Life span multiplied by almost twenty.

She will not work. She will command. She will not follow a routine. She will give life.
---
The queen is not chosen based on her genes. She is created.

What makes this process so fascinating is that worker bees and queens share the same genetic code. DNA does not determine destiny. It is nutrition. Attention. The decisions of the hive.

It is as if, in a humane society, you could take an ordinary child and, by giving them the necessary care, environment and support, make them an extraordinary leader. Without genetic intervention. Without fireworks. Just with support and vision.
---
A leader is born out of a crisis
This metamorphosis does not just save the larvae. It saves the entire colony.

Once the new queen is ready, she takes over the hive, begins to lay eggs, restores ord

Just got a huge order of bee supplies delivered from Maritime Bee & Agriculture Supplies. Start up costs in the spring are always costly, but if you want a competitive price with a Canadian supplier, I definitely recommend this company for large orders. Due to the overwhelming requests for our honey, we needed to expand quickly this year. More honey needs more equipment, gotta keep the colony of customers satisfied :) Have a bee-utiful day!

I know, I know, it's been pouring rain, all day. The upside is that it waters the flowers to feed the bees, and the bees feed us delicious honey, and pollen. Oh, and then propolis, and beeswax to make air purifying, brighter candles.....speaking of candles.....I've been a busy bee....here's a sneak peek!!

This is a really bee-zy sneezy time of year. Spring has sprung and the pollen levels in the air are wreaking havoc on our sinuses. A large number of us have what seems to bee a cold, but it's actually seasonal allergies. Eating local honey and pollen can help desensitize yourself against these symptoms. Have a bee-utiful day!!!!
