It looks like Julie is not sure about this huge daikon. Swipe to see more recent photos of harvesting in the rain and cold last week. We’re all celebrating the sun that came out for the weekend. We typically do a Friday after harvest post, but on Friday we got distracted by a *fantastic* Indian feast hosted by Shaki and Roshni. The food was so good that we all ate too much. Roshni, who has been on the farm team all summer, said her farewell, and took off very early Saturday morning for the airport. We love you, Roshni, and wish you well.💕

We got a visit from Rob and Stephanie, who live in Newfoundland. They are thinking about farming in Nova Scotia, so David invited them over. They talked a lot, toured around, and before they left, helped stack firewood.

We all know that when the temperatures go down, produce in the field gets sweeter! 😁

All the vegetables and herbs from Friday’s harvest went to Warehouse Market at 2767 King St in North End Halifax. The market is open seven days a week.
Weekdays: 9 AM to 6 PM
Weekends: 9 AM to 4 PM.

Bike and car parking available adjacent to the market. Underground parking also available for two dollars an hour in King Square.

Mornings are cool and foggy but afternoons are sunny!☀️ Swipe to see photos of beautiful arugula and other greens after they’ve been uncovered. You will also see the first Siberian kale from the greenhouse. Also a strange leek. Anyone know what’s going on here? Swipe even further to see the two people with recent birthdays. They both had to leave early so we couldn’t properly honour them. David made chocolate cheesecake to celebrate, but we couldn’t celebrate all at the same time.

You’ll also see evidence of a grand transition as field tunnels are taken down and rebuilt, cucumbers are removed, and new winter crops are transplanted their place. If you swipe to the last photo you will see a very cute photo of a typical evening scene: Hak snuggling on David. 🥹

All the local orders were packed for pick up on the farm, the wholesale orders were delivered to the Halifax Food Hub, and most of the harvest went to Warehouse Market in North End Halifax. Find us at 2767 King Street in Richmond Yards. We are open seven days a week:
Weekdays: 9 AM to 6 PM

I was going around the farm taking soil samples after my part of the herb harvest was finished. I ran into Lana, Julie, and Sarah harvesting tomatoes and ground cherries. This might be the end of tomato harvest. 😔 It has been such a great tomato season. Just yesterday David met with Sarah and Steph to discuss how they could make the tomato season even better next year, now that we have two new greenhouses. Farming never gets boring does it?

While the fruiting crops are winding down, the storage crops are really winding up. Greens, of course, are staying steady throughout the year.

Swipe to see a photo of Ainsley, Sara, and Kaitlyn hoeing greens that will be harvested in a few weeks. Also, Ben is working on a new display for herbs at the market.

We also made the decision to drain all of the waterlines to pumps and irrigation systems. We’re expecting a cold weekend.

A full van of beautiful produce was brought into Warehouse Market this afternoon. Find all our Abundant Acres vegetables and herbs, along with Holdanca Farm meat, produce from other local farmers, a selection of imported items, and an expanded grocery and dairy section. Andrew has also been introducing many new convenience food items. It is flying off the shelves!

Warehouse Market is located at 2767 King Street in North End Halifax. We are open seven days a week!

We have come to the point in the season, where everyone is starting to wonder who is going to win the big arm wrestle. Who has developed the most physical strength over the season? It is the time of year when people are carrying a lot of weight. We are trying to develop systems that reduce the load for people and increase it for machinery.

I’m amazed how much food is coming out of the fields!

Swipe to see lemongrass grass harvest, amazing broccoli, colorful, chard, new storage bins in the cold room, Sara holding a snake, a cleared out greenhouse with only rosemary remaining on the side, and Jeff practising unloading a pallet of kale bins off of Dumpy.

Thank you to all the people who have been flocking to the Warehouse Market to get everything they need for their family meal. Thanks to all the organisms in the soil, all the pollinators, and all the pest predators.

Feeling so grateful!

Our ’twins’ today were Jeff and Kaitlyn. The day got sunny and hot half way through harvest ☀️☀️☀️

We harvested extra everything so that tables will be full this weekend. The beets are exceptionally delicious! The golden beets match the colour of the pollen on bees when they are pollinating tulsi. Steph finished harvesting the ginger so they could flip the beds and plant more fall and winter crops. Swipe to see the huge ginger rhizome!

You know the season is getting colder when you see people clutching warm drinks after lunch and talking about socks.

We’re a little sad to see the summer crops slowly ending but very excited to see new crops being planted.

*We’ve decided to offer an 8 week winter farm share in November and December. Stay tuned for more details soon.*

Here is Kaitlyn harvesting lemon grass. Have you tried it?

If you swipe through the photos, you will see some of the recent bulk harvesting happening. Until we get the harvest van’s transmission fixed, we are using the 4 wheel drive dump truck (‘Dumpy’), and a tractor with a pallet on the forks to get bulk crops out of the (rather wet and somewhat poorly drained) field. We are grateful for the beautiful crops of onions, leeks, and brassicas coming out of that field though! 🙂

Rob is modifying Dumpy so we can load more on the back.

I found a metallic sweat bee on the stinging nettle. It is known to be a great general pollinator, and it is very beautiful!

At this time of year we are harvesting a lot of sage and rosemary! Good thing we planted more 😅

Before lunch a NS Power transformer on the road exploded and we suddenly did not have electricity. Hmm. We reported it, got the generator running, and Team AA just kept going! Our generator is set up to supply power to the house and greenhouses, but not the wash-pack area 🤔. Luckily the wash tubs were already filled, and people got out the flashlights on their phones so they could see and just keep going. Jeff was making lunch for the team and stayed cool as a cucumber. He set up at the propane wok burner outside and just kept going until David got the generator going. David had to get the backup generator going as well to finish charging the electric delivery van. 🤪

Today’s lesson: we need to have a backup system or plan for everything!

All the beautiful vegetables and herbs went in to Warehouse Market in North End Halifax. Find us at 2767 King St in the square at Richmond Yards. Bike and vehicle parking available adjacent to the Market.

We are open 7 days a week!
Weekdays: 9am to 6pm
Weekends: 9am to 4pm
*Next week we will be introducing longer open hours!*
