March 2020: Nicole and I both lost our jobs.

July 2020: We're selling hand-labeled bags of mushroom coffee at a farmer's market, praying someone—anyone—will buy one.

Today: 40 stores across Canada, thousands of customers, a brand we're genuinely proud of.

But here's what nobody tells you about starting a business during a pandemic:

The terror. The 3 AM panic. The "what if we just wasted our life savings on mushroom powder" moments. The weeks where we sold 12 bags total and wondered if we were insane.

Nicole perfected the recipe after 200+ test batches. I handled the branding and begged stores to give us a chance. We did everything ourselves—blending, packaging, labeling, shipping—because we couldn't afford to hire anyone.

Then something wild happened: people started telling their friends. Strangers became loyalists. One customer bought our entire farmer's market inventory "to stock up." Local stores reached out. The momentum built.

And suddenly we weren't two unemployed Canadians with a kitchen-table dream anymore. We were building something real.

I just wrote up the full story—the good, the terrifying, the "how did we actually pull this off" moments. It's the most honest thing I've ever written about building Shyne.

Okay, confession time.We spent $1,100 taking mushroom coffee to the streets of Toronto and asking random Canadians to try it.
