Brandon McNulty powered to victory at the Veneto Classic in Italy as UAE Team Emirates-XRG finished its 2026 season with an impressive 78 wins.

The American rider secured a solo victory after a demanding race featuring cobbled climbs and steep gravel sections between Cittadella and Bassano del Grappa.

McNulty crossed the finish line in 3 hours, 32 minutes and 57 seconds, finishing 1 minute and 6 seconds ahead of Anthon Charmig. His teammate Pavel Sivakov claimed third place, giving UAE Team Emirates-XRG two riders on the podium.

The victory was particularly significant for McNulty as it marked his first win in the rainbow jersey since becoming world road race champion in Montréal last month.

Meanwhile, Australian teammate Jay Vine finished second at the Chrono des Nations individual time trial in France, completing the 45.4-kilometre course around Les Herbiers in a strong performance.

Vine finished 2 minutes and 11 seconds behind reigning world time trial champion Remco Evenepoel, securing his third consecutive runner-up finish at the event.

The results capped a successful season for UAE Team Emirates-XRG, which reached 78 victories despite facing crashes, injuries and periods without several key riders.

Max Verstappen fought back from 24th place to finish ninth at the GT World Challenge in Portimao, Portugal, after a costly drive-through penalty disrupted his team’s podium hopes.

The four-time Formula One world champion competed in the three-hour endurance race alongside British drivers Ben Barnicoat and Chris Lulham, a week after winning the Singapore Grand Prix for the second consecutive time.

Barnicoat made a strong start, gaining five positions from 13th on the grid before handing over to Lulham, who helped the team climb to sixth place.

However, Lulham received a drive-through penalty after an incident with Luca Stolz while battling for fifth position. The setback dropped the team to 24th place, leaving Verstappen with just 45 minutes to recover.

Verstappen delivered an impressive late charge, climbing to 15th with 15 minutes remaining before gaining six more positions to secure a ninth-place finish.

Despite missing out on a podium, the Dutch driver demonstrated his determination with a strong recovery drive after the penalty.

Verstappen will now return his focus to Formula One as he targets a third consecutive victory at the United States Grand Prix in Austin next weekend.

Sediqullah Atal scored a brilliant century while Ibrahim Zadran contributed 90 runs to put Afghanistan in a strong position against Zimbabwe in the Abu Dhabi ODI tri-series on October 19, 2026.

Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina staged a remarkable comeback to defeat rising star Rafael Jodar and win the Shanghai Masters title on Sunday, October 18.

The world number 26 recovered from a set down to beat his compatriot 1-6, 7-6 (7/5), 6-4 in a thrilling final, securing the biggest title of his career.

Hong Kong hosted a gruelling underwater hockey tournament over the weekend, attracting dedicated players from across Asia for a sport described as “physical hell.”

The annual HKUWHA Underwater Hockey Tournament took place on October 17, with competitors diving to the bottom of a swimming pool to move a weighted puck using short, curved sticks while holding their breath.

Each team has six players, with no goalkeepers. Players must carefully manage their breathing as they compete to score goals, making the sport both physically demanding and mentally challenging.

Japanese-New Zealander competitor Leo Lines said players must choose when to use their breath, while Hong Kong-based Polish academic Rita Frieske explained that the intensity of the game can make competitors forget how difficult breath-holding is.

Malaysian player Hui Chin Teoh described the sport as a “sadistic study” that brings people together through shared challenges, highlighting the strong community among underwater hockey enthusiasts.

Invented in England in 1954 and originally known as “octopush,” underwater hockey was developed to help divers stay fit during the winter. Although it is not an Olympic sport, it is recognised by the International Olympic Committee and featured at the Southeast Asian Games in 2019.

Organisers hope improved underwater camera technology and social media will help attract more spectators. Many competitors are now preparing for the Elite World Championship in France next April, which is expected to feature around 20 nations.

Australia have taken firm control of the second Test against South Africa in Gqeberha, thanks to a brilliant bowling performance from Scott Boland, who claimed four wickets for just 31 runs.

South Africa ended Day 2 struggling at 97 for 5, with captain Temba Bavuma unbeaten on 41 and Wiaan Mulder on 2. Despite losing early wickets, Bavuma showed strong resistance and helped his side recover from a difficult position.

Zimbabwe’s new Mosi-oa-Tunya International Cricket Stadium in Victoria Falls is nearing completion ahead of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027, as preparations continue across the country’s three host cities.

The main construction work at the stadium is substantially complete, with finishing touches underway on the roofing, seating, corporate facilities and other areas. The venue is targeting full completion by mid-2027.

The stadium is scheduled to host its first World Cup match when Zimbabwe face India on October 24, 2027. It will also stage three Super 7 matches on October 28 and 30, and November 1.

Zimbabwe Cricket is planning a trial match followed by an international series to test the playing facilities and match-day operations before the global tournament begins.

An ICC inspection team recently visited venues in Harare, Bulawayo and Victoria Falls, welcoming progress on stadium improvements and wider infrastructure.

Harare Sports Club and Queens Sports Club are also being upgraded, with selected stands set for refurbishment and floodlights planned for Queens Sports Club and the Victoria Falls venue.

Zimbabwe will co-host the 2027 Cricket World Cup with South Africa and Namibia, with the tournament expected to bring international teams and fans to the region.

Pakistan and Sri Lanka have been fined for maintaining slow over-rates during the opening match of the ODI tri-series at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on October 18.

Pakistan were fined 10 per cent of their players’ match fees after falling two overs behind the required rate, while Sri Lanka received a five per cent fine for being one over short.

ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees member Jeff Crowe imposed the sanctions under the ICC Code of Conduct, which penalises teams for failing to complete their overs within the allotted time.

Pakistan captain Shaheen Shah Afridi and Sri Lankan captain Kusal Mendis accepted the charges and proposed sanctions, avoiding formal hearings.

Despite the penalty, Pakistan began their tri-series campaign with a convincing 37-run victory over Sri Lanka. The hosts scored 305 runs, led by Salman Ali Agha’s impressive 107 off 90 balls, while Babar Azam contributed 45 runs.

Sri Lanka fought back through Pavan Rathnayake’s 79 and Janith Liyanage’s 60, but were eventually bowled out for 268. Shaheen Afridi took three wickets, while Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf and Faheem Ashraf claimed two wickets each.

Salman Ali Agha was named Player of the Match for his match-winning century as Pakistan secured their first victory in the tri-series.

Bangladesh have appointed left-arm spinner Nahida Akter as their new women’s T20I captain on an initial one-year term, with the ICC Women’s Emerging Nations Trophy 2026 set to be her first assignment.

The 25-year-old replaces Nigar Sultana, who led Bangladesh in 82 T20I matches before stepping down following the team’s struggles in the Asia Cup and Asian Games.

Nahida is Bangladesh’s leading wicket-taker in women’s T20Is, with 132 wickets at an average of 17.38 and best figures of 5 for 8. She has also claimed 81 wickets in ODIs since making her international debut in September 2015.

Among her standout performances was a five-wicket haul against Pakistan in 2023, followed by three crucial wickets against the same opponents during Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup victory this year.

Middle-order batter Sobhana Mostary has been appointed vice-captain. She recently made history by scoring an ODI century against Australia, becoming the first Bangladesh woman to achieve the feat.

Bangladesh will look to begin a new chapter under Nahida’s leadership as the team prepares for the Emerging Nations Trophy next month.
