We are very excited to be part of this project, it’s been years of planning. The job of fitting out a 6000 sq m greenhouse with four modules capable of producing 250 tons of fresh produce per annum. Planning is everything!
The FISH team is excited to announce we are one step closer to realising the vision of creating a place for healing and changing the cycle of (re)engagement in the justice system for First Nations people.
After 7 years of planning, 3 years of developing the detailed site plans and program with the FISH co-design group, meetings with state and local governments, the work of our dedicated FISH team and our valued partners, we've now formally submitted the Development Approval application for the FISH Myalup Karla Waangkiny Healing and Justice Initiative. 👏👏👏
This wouldn't have been possible without the ongoing support of the RAE group, The Hogan Family Foundation, and the Olssen Family.
Most people wouldn't realise just how much goes into getting a project of this nature to this stage for development approval!
The site plan and rehabilitation program has been developed simultaneously with the co-design group of 26 First Nations people, each bringing their diverse knowledge and experience in the justice system to the design process. FISH had then completed an initial preliminary submission and received feedback from the State Development Assessment Unit (part of the WA Planning Commission) and further work was completed from a design and engineering perspective.
The whole 11ha site in Myalup, South West WA is being developed as a national prototype, and will include:
◾️ Healing, rehabilitation & mentoring for First Nations people at risk or in the justice system
◾️ Agri-innovation: aquaponics, horticulture, traditional food and medicine, and research
◾️ Education, training and employment opportunities
◾️ Manufacturing sustainable housing panels
◾️ Construction and maintenance
◾️ Landscaping, grounds maintenance, and nursery.
◾️ Hospitality, retail, and tourism
◾️ 48 resident participants and 12 residential peer mentors
◾️ 20 low-risk participants on community work release
◾️ 20 participants on community service orders
◾️ Qualified staff to support program participants (onsite and in the community)
The FISH Myalup Karla Waangkiny Healing and Justice Initiative is one our key initiatives working towards FISH's mission to improve the social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and break the intergenerational cycles of trauma, poverty, and engagement in the justice system.
